Dinner @ Brussels Sprouts, Robertson Quay

As you know, we like to go to area along the Singapore River. We enjoy our strolls along the river and there are many lovely restaurants with a view. One that caught our eye was Brussels Sprouts in Robertson Quay.

There's always a long queue there, and with an active child at hand, no way were we going to stand in a queue for maybe half an hour when there so many other restaurants to try out. However, it was always at the back of my mind as a must-try-out-when-we-can restaurant. After all, the long queue must be there for a reason, right??!

As luck would have it, the boy had an industry dinner there about 2 weeks back! Yay! Finally a chance to eat there... without a queue, and for free!!! Well, maybe not for free, because he had to attend an industry conference first and pay for a participation fee for that. But at least WE {i.e. little pumpkin & I} got to eat for free heehee

We arrived at Brussels Sprouts on a Saturday around 7.30pm. Already, it was beginning to fill up. There was an area cordoned off for the dinner party and we took an al fresco table. I don't usually like to eat outside, especially in the hot Singapore weather, but it was surprisingly comfortable with the river breeze & many ceiling fans. Anyway, the tables inside are either high tables or in cramped spaces, so sitting outside is much better.

In the party menu, appetizers and desserts were already fixed, but we could choose our main dishes from a selection of their specials.

The starter platter consisted of tomato stuffed Grey Shrimp Salad, Rollmops served with Apple Dressing and Belgian Cheese Salad. The Grey Shrimp Salad was a bit spicy and the Rollmops {pickled herring fillets} were delicious! However, the Belgian Cheese Salad was a bit dry.

The little pumpkin couldn't eat much of this, but she did enjoy the nuts in the Belgian Cheese Salad ;p

The boy ordered the Mussels Brussels Sprouts Special which came with free-flow of french fries {heaven for the bub!!} Brussels Sprouts is famous for its wide variety of mussels! The Mussels Brussels Sprouts Special is cooked in a clear sauce of black pepper, butter, celery, onion and parsley.

The boy liked it very much :) Especially the sauce, which was warm and buttery. However, he did comment that the mussels were kinda small, which I must agree. I still prefer my big juicy chilli mussels from Conca's in Perth! I could finish a big bowl all by myself heehee

I had the Braised Veal Cheek infused with Dark Beer and served with Baby Potatoes. Mmm.. I really enjoyed these! The meat was so soft and melts in your mouth. It was even soft enough for the little pumpkin to enjoy. There was also a good amount of baby potatoes that did not make the dish too filling.

I ordered the Roasted Cod served with Tomato Braised Mussels for the little pumpkin. Again, very buttery and soft.. plus no bones! She finished about 1/2 of the cod, in addition to quite a few of the fries :) The boy and I finished the rest. The vegetables were sweet and still crunchy. Great!

Our table also shared a Homemade Kurobuta Pork Sausages served with Stoemp. For a moment, I thought there was a typo in the menu. What's Stoemp?? :/ Well, I checked and it's actually a Belgium {Brussels Sproats is a Belgium restuarant btw} or Netherlands dish made of mash potatoes, vegetables, herbs and spices. Ok, I ate that and just thought it was really good mash haha.

The Kurobuta Pork Sausages, however, was a bit overpowered by the pepper inside. Still delectable, but such a shame because kurobuta is supposed to be a flavourful good meat by itself.

Desserts. Ahh.. best part of the meal for me! The dessert platter consisted of Kriek Cheesecake, White Chocolate Cake and Belgium Waffles. From these samplings, I think the Cheesecake and White Chocolate Cake are nice.. however, the Waffles were a bit tasteless. Perhaps if you order it as a dish by itself with the chocolate sauce and ice-cream it will be better.

I would still like to return here another time to try some of their other signature dishes. Brussels Sprouts has a Kids Eat Free promotion during lunchtime {12pm - 3pm} on Saturdays and Sundays. It includes a dish from the kids menu, a free-flow of drink & a scoop of ice-cream. The next time we go we will take advantage of this offer :) I'd rate it a 8/10 for parents to bring their kids there.
