Thankful Thursday: My Job

You won't often hear me talk about work here {yes, I'm a FTWM}, simply because 1) nothing interesting really happens, and 2) I prefer to keep it private. I can tell you what life is like for a FTWM but that is another post for another day ;p

My dream job is too demanding on my family life so I'm not pursuing it now. It eats me sometimes that I'm not doing something that I really like but there are many things to thankful for, and these are the things that keep me going at my current job especially on those days I wake up for work singing "Everyday I'm Suffering" to the tune of LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem.

Things like
  • Good pay that contributes to our household expenses
  • Fixed working hours with no OT
  • Ample office & desk space {I cringe when I see small work stations!}
  • Convenient, cheap & delicious food available
  • Understanding boss that appreciates my work {guess who just got promoted! *grins*}
  • Friendly, non-bitchy colleagues {maybe because they are mainly guys haha}
  • Strong knowledge-based environment that encourages training & skill-building courses
Other than my job scope, you can see that I have it pretty good. It is oft said,

"Choose a job you love,
And you will never work a day in your life."

but not everybody has that opportunity. At this moment in life, many other things means more to me than doing what I love at work. Some may not agree and advocate just walking away to do something else. However, having the means and time to spend with my girl is my priority now and maybe in the future, I can find a job I truly love. For now, I'm just thankful for what I have at my current job.

I think, as moms and even dads we sacrifice a lot if it means being there for our kids and making sure they are happy and taken care off!!!

What a lovely heart-felt post Ai. I love your perspective on your job and family. I am looking at returning to work and I realise that I too will need to make a similar compromise.

Woohoo congrats on your promotion! It is always good when you get recognised for doing a job well :)

Yes it might be lovely to have a job that you love but sadly you are right it is not always available and sometimes other things to consider. I am glad that you can see the good in your job

Hello, it's good to think about the pros and cons of parts of our life and to be grateful for the best bits and patient with the not so good bits. Enjoyed reading your balanced approach here.

As a FTWM myself, I do agree that a job that gives you a good balance of working hours with a decent pay is what keeps us moms in the work force. Congrats on your promotion. Hope you do get to pursue what you really are passionate about in future! Don't give up on your dreams.

I'm sure your sacrifice in not pursuing your dream job is well understood by your family. I'm sure your little girl appreciates you being there for her.. congrads on your promotion.

Ho ho congrats on the promotion! What you listed is all I would look for in a job, EXCEPT the most important one (fulfilling job scope) is missing heh.

I move around on assignments and typically big workstations aren't provided. At the mo the only convenient place for lunch is the canteen sigh. Gotta endure for 6 months.

The one thing I would change about my job would be the hours. If only they were shorter!

Congrats on the promotion! So glad you are appreciated :)

Also I LOVE the pixelated tights! Awesome!

Susi: agree!

SportyMummy: oh good luck with your new job! will take some time for adjustment but don't worry :)

Lyndal: thanks, pretty happy about it too heh

Seana: thanks for coming by!

Susan: thank you. this is a post to keep and remind myself often when work gets blah haha

Dominique: thanks :)

Stacy: what's happening after 6 months? But less hours mean less pay too haha...

Kate: love them too. Should have put in one of my job blessings as being able to wear funky tights whenever I want ;p

Very exciting news! Congrats! I am a working mom, and though my job isn't always easy (especially this week), I do really enjoy it. I feel blessed to be part of a company that is growing and succeeding during a time when it's so hard to find good jobs.

I love your attitude! I could somehow relate to your situation. I have a boring job, but the earnings are decent. Not everyone ends up in a job they like - it might even be too idealistic. We are lucky to even land on a job that pays well (Look at others, many of them are even jobless!), and instead of whining about how we dislike it, we should learn to love it and always look at the positive side of things. You are right, family is more important than career.

i'm a working mom and operate a family business. it's definitely not my passion, so i guess that's the reason for this blog. a creative outlet of sorts.

Sacrificing for your kids. No one knows until your a single mother of 4 working three/four jobs cuz I couldn't find one full time job. I hardly ever got to see my kids because I always worked. My poor oldest daughter's childhood got taken away because she babysat for me all the time & helped me so. What a good girl. One time I had to sell my winter coat to buy the kids Christmas presents, but we had a nice Christmas & we had lots of love & lots of fun always & they were healthy & happy & that's all that counted. Congrats on your promotion, but always always try to have quality time with your child.

Oh after 6 months, it's on to the next assignment. Which might be another 6 months or shorter/longer.

Another quote I remind myself of is You CAN have it all - just not All at Once (or the same time) so you are doing what you must for now, as long as you keep dreaming. Do not dream forever though and take steps at least weekly toward making your dream job come true. You will know when the time is right.

I can totally relate, Ai. It's good to know I am not alone here. You know what I mean. Hang on n keep the faith. We will get to where we want to be. Great sharing :D

I get what you mean by this. I've stuck with my work situation because it aligned well with my family priorities, especially in getting pregnant with my second child in 2010. I'm currently on maternity leave though I'm due back in April and may consider a change (since I'm pretty sure we're done having kids). My family is still my priority though no matter whst happens. In fact, if we could afford it, id probably stick to part-time. We'll see.
