Lil Pumpkin has been watching a few baking and cooking youtube videos. I'm not sure if she is hinting to me or whatever {one of her faves is a pink doll cake!} but since she's showing some interest, I decided to play along and we had a little baking session :)
Luckily, I had a packet of Betty Crocker brownie mix at hand and used that. So very convenient and I can always depend on old Betty for delicious, oh-so-satisfying baked goodness. Lil Pumpkin and I had baking sessions before but she just liked to roll the dough and throw it on the floor more than "helping" haha
Now, at 2.5 years old, she can listen and follow my instructions, and it was evident that her comprehension and motor skills had improved as she is able to do simple tasks like whisking....
Or pouring ingredients into the bowl. We added extra almonds & pistachios because the boy loves nuts!Lil Pumpkin was really, really happy with herself and I think it did give her a sense of achievement to be mummy's little helper. I enjoyed this special mother-daughter bonding time too and look forward to more activities inside the kitchen with her.
Baking and cooking can be so enriching for kids as they
- practice fine motor skills like rolling, cutting, grinding, pouring etc.
- learn how to measure and count,
- learn about changes between different food states,
- learn different colours, shapes and sizes,
- foster creativity, for example by coming up with their own food presentation
- build confidence in completing tasks, and
- gain more knowledge about the food they eat e.g. different cultures, festivals, significance etc.

My daughter has been a baking-holic... since she was about a year and a half, she's always tagged along to the kitchen, now she begs to bake cookies, cake, brownies...she's my little baker!

I prop my 16 month old girl up to watch me while I cook. And get her to help me get stuff. When she's a little older, I plan to fully exploit the 'child labour'. ;)
Ah yes yes, creating homey kitchen memories for my little one is on my list too. So glad I have a little GIRL, hehe.

I think this is fantastic. With all the cooking and baking shows out today and thanks to YouTube it seems like a lot of kids are into doing this. Had they had those when I was a kid, I probably would have been way better at cooking and would have learned a lot sooner. I'm still learning at 33. I can see why these shows inspire kids, they inspire me as well.
Someday when she is old enough to be home by herself and can cook on her own without burning the house down, you'll really enjoy coming home to a whole meal that she prepared all by herself.

My kids do love to cook. My son likes to make Patrick's Chicken (which is basically cut up chicken breast that we roll in egg and crushed cheezits) It makes the unpalatable chicken something he can stand!
Really practical post. Miss T helps me bake sometimes too but often she plays next to me while I bake. Today she played with longans and lychees in measuring cups whilst I baked, counting and organising them.
she looks so cute in the chef hat! And yes I think all kids love to be our kitchen helpers because it really gives them a sense of achievement to be somewhat 'useful' to mummy. Angel loves to help me hang clothes (we have to do it in the basement at our sweden apartment here) one by one and she just gets a thrill out of it. Glad you all had fun!
