Mandarin oranges are symbols of good luck & fortune. They are presented in pairs as well-wishes to family and friends during 拜年 {bai nian}.

Mandarin oranges in Cantonese is called "kum" which sounds like gold. Hence the significance of prosperity and good fortune.
Makes me proud to be a Chinese :)
