Singapore National Day 2012: 5 Things to do with Kids

For those unaware, Singapore's National Day is on 9 August. To celebrate the nation's birthday, there is a grand National Day Parade {NDP} and this year's theme is "Loving Singapore, Our Home". Heaps of activities going on now to encourage all Singaporeans to reflect on what it means to love Singapore, and how you appreciate your country. You can check out all the activities and updates on NDP 2012 here. I especially like the Instagram competition {since I'm an Insta-addict haha, find me as @AiSakuraHaruka} that's going on for participants to capture photos that express this year's NDP theme.

National Day is obviously a public holiday, and if you don't have tickets to go and watch NDP at The Float @ Marina Bay, here's 5 other activities you can do with your family.

1. Fly in the Sky {Singapore Flyer National Day 2012 Celebrations}
The Singapore Flyer has fun activities lined up just for National Day like Hip Hop dance performances by Hopstacles, special National Day Full Butler Sky Dining flight opportunities {4-course dinner}, and even a live screening of the parade. If you take a ride in the Singapore Flyer at the right time, you can even be dazzled by the fireworks finale happening right in front of your eyes, but of course from inside the safety of the Flyer capsule :)

By the way, there's an offer now where the first 47 people who say "I Love Singapore" at the ticketing counters will be rewarded with a free Singapore Sling flight upgrade with every purchase of an adult ticket. Valid only for the weekends from now until 31 Aug 12. Details found on their website.

2. Have a picnic
Pack some lovely dinner or buy some obentos to eat together as a family at Marina Bay Sands Boulevard, Merlion Park or maybe the Marina Boulevard Open Area. These spots are lovely areas for the kids to run around and play, and also offer fantastic views of the Red Lion's display, aerial flypast and fireworks from NDP!

3. Visit a museum
The National Heritage Board {NHB} museums have an Open House on National Day, which means free admission to all visitors! Unless otherwise stated, it involves all NHB Museums like the Asian Cultivations Museum, National Museum of Singapore, Singapore Art Museum, Peranakan Museum etc. Learn more about Singapore's unique history and heritage on her birthday! Free admission includes special exhibitions like Treasures of the Aga Khan Museum: Architecture in Islamic Arts at ACM and Gold Rush: Treasures of Ukraine at the National Museum.

4. Go to Carnival by The Bay {Making Memories Together}
It is a 5-day carnival celebration from 8 Aug - 12 Aug at the Esplanade with local dance, music, film and visual art performances. A lot of the activities are free and I think the kids will love the Stencil a Postcard or Face Paining activities at the Concourse. I know Lil Pumpkin would! :)  Full events listings can be found on the Esplanade website.

5. Watch NDP 2012 at home
Sure, it can't beat the atmosphere and excitement from watching the parade live, but the feeling is also fantastic to watch it together with family in the comfort of your home :) Grab a bowl of popcorn and snacks, open a few beers, and lay back in your sofa to relax. Another advantage is that you can go to your clean toilets without clambering with others in the heat!

And oh, the Singapore version of the popular Sakuke game show where contestants are put through a tough obstacle course to test their strength and determination, will premiere right after NDP 2012 on Channel 5!  It's an exciting and entertaining show that we've liked for a few years. Sometimes the contestants turn out in such crazy outfits :P When the boy first saw this in Japan, he told me that he wanted to give it a  try in the future... well, now he can right here in Singapore haha. Hope the local version will be just as good.

But where-ever you are or whatever you are doing,  remember that at 8.05pm, it is time to say the Pledge and sing the National Anthem. Stand tall and say it proudly to show your loyalty to Singapore at this special moment!

What do you have planned for National Day 2012?
