Coca-Cola Chicken {可乐鸡} Recipe

The first time I tasted Coca-Cola Chicken was a few years back when a friend cooked it for my birthday. I was very amused that a can of soft drink was used to cook such a simple, yet delicious dish! It makes sense though since the tasty Coke cameralises to coat the chicken in a sweet, sticky glaze.

Hubby wanted to cook a dish for our National Day dinner with our new Tefal Softline Saute-Pan a few days back so I chose this easy dish for him. Was craving for some Coca-Cola Chicken but the boy ended up eating more than me!!!

Prep Time:
About 1 hour

Ingredients:
1 kg mid-joint chicken wings
500ml regular Coca-Cola

For Marinade
4 tbsp light soy sauce
2 tbsp dark soy sauce
4 tbsp sesame oil

Method:
  1. Mix the marinade sauce and put in a container.
  2. Put the chicken in the container and coat both sides, then leave in the fridge to marinate for at least 30 mins. Don't leave it out to marinade as bacteria can grow as the chicken warms up.
  3. Heat oil in pan and brown chicken on both sides over medium heat.
  4. Add the Coca-Cola and marinade then simmer for about 20 mins until the sauce thickens. Flip the chicken wings over halfway to allow the other side to absorb the sauce.
  5. Serve hot with garnish.
You can use drumlets and chicken wings too. If the chicken is cooked through but the sauce hasn't thickened, you can thicken sauce with cornstarch {trick my mum taught me}. Don't add it directly to the sauce as it will clump, but first mix equal parts of cornstarch and cold water, then add it to the simmering sauce.

I'm not sure if Diet Coke or Coke Zero will work in this dish... I'll try it out another day but if you've cooked Coca-Cola Chicken with it before, let me know! :)

I cooked Pineapple & Kiwifruits Fried Rice for our dinner that day too. The simple recipe for that dish is here!

I've made it before. But I was disappointed not to taste any cola in the chicken. Thought not much difference from just using sugar. Was yours better?

Angeline: yup tell me how yours goes. The pineapple & Kiwifruits fried rice coming up tomorrow!

Estella: haha no worries. Enjoy!

Stacy: I never tried cooking chicken with sugar before but ours could taste cola. Maybe add more cola if it's not strong enough for you?
