Christmas 2013 | Get Your Own Elf on the Shelf Soon!

The Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas tradition that started in the US. Apparently, Santa sends his scout elves out to Elf Adoption Centers. Waiting for their families to bring them home, these patient elves hibernate until their family reads The Elf on the Shelf book, gives their elf a very special name, and registers their adoption online. Once named, each scout elf will receive its Christmas magic and become a part of the family’s Christmas each and every year.

Excellent listeners and even better observers, these scout elves are the eyes and ears of Santa Claus and help to report the good / bad deeds of the children each night. They cannot be touched {must tell the kiddos this!!} or else they may lose their magic.The elves also like to play games with the family, so each day, they will be found hiding in different spots of the house. On Christmas Eve, the scout elf will listen for Santa’s bell and then fly back to the North Pole until the next season, wishing every girl and each boy a Christmas of peace and a year full of joy.

I first learnt about this tradition from the Aussie and US blogs I followed. They were posting all the cute "mischief" that their little elves get into each day, and there's a whole lot of ideas on Pinterest too. I wasn't really planning on getting one until late November last year {hence the real reason why our elf arrived late!} when I was surfing Book Depository and saw that it was on sale there. Thought it would be a fun thing to do with Lil Pumpkin for Christmases to come!

Our girl elf finally arrived on 5 days before Christmas and we named her Arwen Galadriel Winters. I had a hard time choosing the name but was obviously inspired by the elves in Lord of the Rings haha. Such a pretty name! Too bad we only have a few days before Christmas to play with her, but at least she did arrive before Christmas... with a cute explanation for Lil Pumpkin :P

If you want to get one for your family, you should purchase one now so that it reaches you by December, when all the elves come out to play!! Check out Amazon, Book Depository or Fishpond. The elves come as a girl or boy, dark-skinned or light-skinned.. and if you prefer, they have plush toy versions too. I suggest you get the set with the book as it's such a delightful read too!
