Fitness Diary :: Crossfit Fundamental Course @ Crossfit Hub

I went for my first-ever CrossFit class on Sunday - the CrossFit Fundamental Course at CrossFit Hub. I mentioned that I wanted to take up Muay Thai again, but the friend I was supposed to join with can't do it due to his leg injuries. His doctor recommended him to try out CrossFit instead and so he suggested I check that out too.

CrossFit is supposed to be an an effective way to get fit. Anyone from little kids to grandmas can scale the programs and do it. It is a fitness program that combines a wide variety of functional movements {pull-ups, squats, push-ups, weightlifting, gymnastics, running etc} into a timed or scored workout.

Since my friend will be joining CrossFit Hub, one of the CrossFit gyms in Singapore, I decided to have my trial class there too. It's pretty easy to get to after work {when I plan to go for classes} as it is just behind Tai Seng MRT station and also kind of near home.

If you're expecting a pristine, air-conditioned gym like those at California Fitness or Fitness First, then be prepared to be disappointed. CrossFit Hub is located inside an industrial building and it is a no-frills, basic workout place. Goodness, the toilet doesn't even have toilet paper!!! However, it is very airy so it doesn't stink from sweat and is pretty clean. Actually, very clean, considering the place I used to train at for Muay Thai hahahaha. Still... it is not a place for 姑娘s {gu niang, girls} that like their hot showers and fresh towels.

This is also probably why their fees are more affordable than the local other CrossFit gyms, as pointed out by another girl that came for the trial class too.

Anyway the trial class is actually the CrossFit Fundamental Course and you have to attend that before you can attend any other regular class. Even though it's a "fundamental" course, it was pretty intense. For warm-ups, we did 10 sets {10 - 1 reps} of push-ups, sit-ups and squats. When I heard it from our trainer, Xin, I was like.. "ARE YOU SERIOUS?? THIS IS YOUR WARM-UP??!" From then on, I knew CrossFit was not for play.

After our "warm-up" {which I still considered to be an actual work-out!}, we did the Karen, which is to squat then throw a medicine ball against the wall above a line in a fluid movement for... 150 times. I thought Xin was just gonna explain to us what it was the ask us to do maybe 80 reps since it was our first time but noooooo, we had to complete the Karen exercise. So there, I did another 150 squats, on top of the 55 "warm-up" squats, and completed 205 squats for the day. My legs are still wobbly now.

The Karen wasn't the end of it and after that we did 2 rounds of jogging and throwing the darn heavy medicine ball to a partner.

I was pretty spent after that 1 hour class but I felt very happy. Happy that I was able to sweat it with fellow fitness enthusiasts, happy I've found a place to de-stress, and happy for a new year of regular exercise and increased health. I'll probably start going for weekly regular classes from mid-Jan or early Feb, after my work trip. Yup, I'm gonna be traveling again next week... but more on that later :P

Again, this isn't so much about losing weight, but about my entire well-being. After a good work-out, I feel so rejuvenated and just.. happier and healthier :) And this is the way I want to be for the rest of my life.

It's great that you've found an exercise program that you enjoy! If it's a chore, we're much less likely to keep going. :-)
Best wishes in the New Year!

I had been wondering what cross fit was, cause I had heard quite a lot about it. Would love to give it a go, but sadly I just don't have a spare moment to do it. I do do quite a few squats at home though :)
