The boy and I met her teachers last Friday while the children were having their afternoon nap. The biggest news of the day was that Lil Pumpkin has shown huge improvement in her Chinese {yay!} thanks in large part to her enrichment class and nightly revision with her daddy. She can now understand simple instructions {reading and speaking} in Chinese, and express her opinions in Chinese more confidently too. Well done Lil Pumpkin!
This semester Lil Pumpkin started going to preschool 4 times a week, in preparation for starting K1 whereby she will go daily. Her English teacher noted again that she picks up new skills very quickly, and because of her more consistent presence in class, she has progressed well academically and is hitting all the learning objectives for her class. Socially, she's always been doing fantastic {no surprise there!}.
One thing they were concerned about is that she doesn't manage her time well e.g. gets distracted and takes too long to eat, or stays too focused on task details and doesn't finish it in time. In K1, the teachers would expect the kids to be more independent and finish each task within a certain time, so if she doesn't keep up, things will pile up.
At home we take things pretty easy. We don't impose time limits like say, she must finish her food or colouring within the hour. When she's done, she's done. However, as she gets older and enters formal schooling, time management and self-discipline are more important especially as she starts juggling school, enrichment classes, play, explorations, family and friends. It's good that her teachers reminded us and we need to start helping her to organise and keep track of her time. Admittedly, I need to work on this area too :P
Other updates for this semester are that Lil Pumpkin:
- is good with patterns and Maths {probably gets it from her father hahaha}
- is able to retell stories
- can make predictions on events and activities e.g. in science experiments
- can write several letters correctly
- needs to improve with her phonics and recognition of words
- recognises differences and similarities in qualities experienced through the senses and is able to compare and describe these
- is willing to write more in Chinese
- must still continue to practise her Chinese outside school

It sounds like she is thriving and doing great. Really, show me a 5 year old who doesn't get distracted? Nick's report card said "with reminders, stays focused and on task" LOL "With reminders" I bet she has to remind most kids every 5 minutes what they are supposed to be doing! :) They grow up so quickly, my big boy will be Grade 1 when he goes back at the end of January!! x Aroha
They do Science experiments in N2? Oh my goodness...
Well done, Lil Pumpkin! She's growing up so fast, isn't she? Soon you'll be enrolling her in P1...
What a milestone right? We just had our MTP sesson too and are so heartned to hear that Sophie is doing well in school. She's transiting o K1 in Decmeber now and is so proud to be a big girl in K1. And you're right about instilling more discipline and time management. Guess we'll have to be a good example in those areas too :)
Sounds like Lil Pumpkin is doing wonderfully in her schooling. And yay on the Chinese accomplishments! I can't believe she will be going to all day school soon! How time is flying by!
Your Lil Pumpkin is one smart cookie! I can't believe how fast she's growing up! I feel like I'm a proud aunty following her developments and achievements!
She sounds like she's doing so great!! And look how much she's growing...they really do grow up so fast :)
How the year has flown by! She is looks so tall in her uniform now. Sounds like she did very well this year. Hope she enjoys her break before moving up to the next class in the new year!
Well done Lil Pumpkin!
Taylah was always getting spoken to about being easily distracted too, so I get how hard it is starting to teach them to focus more! Good luck :)
What a glowing report for your precious girl! Bet you're proud. My girl still doesn't eat her lunch by the time the bell goes at her school, but food isn't a priority for her. She'll soon have enough routines so don't worry about giving her any now, let her enjoy just being! Merry Christmas to you and your lovely family Ai if we don't 'chat' before then!! Em xx
