It's the Year of the Horse for Chinese New Year 2014! The Chinese Zodiac {生肖, sheng xiao} is based on a twelve year cycle, and each year in that cycle is related to an animal sign. These animal signs are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. It's said that if you're born under a certain animal sign, you have that animal's characteristics.
I'm a Rat by the way :P Anyway, I've listed 8 interesting kids crafts ideas related to the horse below to celebrate and welcome the Year of the Horse! Why 8? Because that is a lucky number in Chinese culture heh.. Have fun!
1. How cool is this
Movable Paper Horse? Finish it by getting the kids to decorate it to their heart's desire with paint, glitter, scrap cloth etc.

Paper Cup Carousel Horses are so pretty and great for decorating any kids' room!
3. Another way to recycle your toilet paper rolls is to make

4. Drank a lot of wine during the recent festive season? I hope you kept the wine corks to make these cute

5. If you find the above crafts too tiny, make a
Giant Cardboard Box Horse instead!! :P Great costume for this year's Halloween party too actually.
6. The
Sock Stick Horses seems a little more complicated, but definitely cheaper than those bought in the shops, right? :)
7. If no-sew projects seem more up your alley {like me! haha} then you might like to try making these
Pool Noodle Horses instead.
8. Save some of the disposable party plates to make these easy
Paper Plate Rocking Horses. Again, easy for the younger ones to colour and decorate!

I love the sock stick horse! Allison had a stick horse once that her dad accidentally broke. I'm sure he could whip her up one of the sock horses to replace it easily!
