Bub & Me: Singapore Safari Zoo Run 2014

We took part in the Safari Zoo Run last year and had such a fun time, we were excited to join again this year!! It was conceptualised 6 years ago to commemorate the death anniversary of orang utan Ah Meng, one of Singapore’s most adored animal personalities. Apparently over 8,000 people took part in the run last Sunday through the lush green paths and wildlife exhibits!

This is the adult Race Pack that we collected the week before from 112 Katong. This year, the Race Pack collection experience was really smooth, and we didn't need to queue long at all! The adult Race Pack includes a red Brooks tee and Wildlife Reserves Singapore Tumbler.

For the kids they received a special design tee, horse plush toy {to celebrate the CNY Year of the Horse?}, some comics and cornflakes.

We arrived early again to have a hearty breakfast at Ah Meng's Cafe before our 6km Fun Run. I think there should be more snack stalls and sitting areas at the event carnival since a lot of the participants are looking for food/drinks before and after their races. F&B outlets - Ah Meng's Cafe, KFC, Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shop and The Wild Deli - are available nearby but the queue for food is really long. We lined up for about 25 minutes before we got to order.

The nasi lemak is different from last year's {no more egg but there's veg} and price has increased I think. It's now S$9.50, but still very filling and yummy. Lil Pumpkin finished most of the peanut butter toast and Dino Milo {iced Milo with powdered Milo topping}. She really surprises me with her appetite sometimes!

The weather was much better than last year's and was sunny all the way. Yay!! The 6km Fun Run is a non-competitive event so we were there having a slow walk/jog, taking in all the sights, sounds and erm, smell of the zoo :P Starting off through the Night Safari then going through the Singapore Zoo {we didn't pass through the River Safari}, the route was the same as last year's.

People ambling on at the starting line... Everybody gets a finisher's medal, so there's not really a need for speed hahaha. Guest-of-honour Mr Ching Wei Hong, chairman of the National Family Council, flagged off the event.

Family photo before we get all hot and bothered *grins*

There's a marker after each kilometer completed. A certain sense of achievement passing by each one and many people {including us! hehe} stop to take a photo with it :P #levelunlocked

Chinese New Year just ended but the CNY decorations are still up. Lil Pumpkin is born in the Year of the Ox so the boy was telling her more about her "fortune" for the year. Her tip reads "Go for greener pastures! This is your year for grazing better as you'll receive the rewards for your hard work."

Although Lil Pumpkin's a trooper and was happy to walk/jog, honestly, we don't expect her to do it for 6km... and we can't carry her for most of the way either! So we brought along her stroller and it was very useful in carrying all our barang-barang like snacks, water, raincoat {for her in case it rains}, extra clothes etc.

I suggest you do the same too, especially if you have young kids. We saw some parents panting along carrying their kids and backpacks, and kudos to their good effort, but they really looked dead-tired and I'm not sure if they found the Fun Run very fun :/

Sleepy lion we saw on the way hehe

If you've not been through Night Safari during the day, this is a good time to go as usually, it's only open from 7.30pm daily. Of course, you won't be able to experience what Night Safari is famous for - seeing over 2,500 animals in their naturalistic night-time habitats - but you'll have a better view of the animals and their homes during the day.

Up-close and personal with the elephants. You can almost touch their trunks!

Finally at the finish line after 1.5 hours! Well done us!! :)

The unique medal design is different year by year since different animals are featured. Definitely one of the cutest I've seen!

After the race, since the weather was so inviting, we stayed on and cooled down at the Singapore Zoo's huge water-play area. With our race bib, we could enter the zoo for free that day! #happiness

You know one of those days when you're so utterly tired that you just want to crash into bed, but darn happy that it was a day well-spent and would gladly do it all over again?? Well, that

If you're participating as a family, you should sign up for the 6km Fun Run. A family package {2 adults & 2 kids} costs S$144 during the early bird period, and if your kid is under 3 years old, he/she is free! See more information about the different race categories and registration on the Singapore Zoo Run website. Non-Singapore residents are welcome too! We're looking forward to Safari Zoo Run 2015 for sure haha.

What an amazing thing to do as a family. I have actually been considering signing up for my first race this year, but not with my kids yet. I need to see if I can do on on my own first :)

Love it! Great photos of the zoo and how cool that there's a water play park at the end. Good on you for doing the 6km and taking the wee one, making it manageable and fun for everyone.

Lydia: thanks! we enjoyed it heaps

Masshole Mommy: Oh you should! Maybe do it with your hubby. It's easier if there's someone to train and support you :)
