Bub & Me: LightSeeker Musical @ Resorts World Sentosa

Earlier this month, the boy and I brought Lil Pumpkin to watch the LightSeeker at Resorts World Sentosa {RWS}. An original production of RWS, it tells a story of the power of choice when stuck at the crossroads of fear versus freedom. In the fantasy world of the LightSeeker, a terrifying warrior called the General pursues a precious energy, The Light, that will make his Emperor more powerful. His quest leads him to Nova, a girl who seems to have the ability to create The Light.

However, after capturing her, he soon discovers that he must make the ultimate choice to be secure in the dark world he knows, or embrace a new world with light.

We'd watched their first original production, Voyage de La Vie, a few years back and that was more like an acrobatic show. LightSeeker is a musical and all the songs were written by acclaimed local songwriter, Dick Lee. It's heartening to see local talents given such a great opportunity to shine on this world-class stage. One of their lead performers, the Emperor, is also a veteran local actor, Lim Kay Siu, and he holds his own on the stage with stars from London's West End. Bravo!

The 54 different computer-generated backdrop and 281 trillion flashing LED lights is really stunning, but a little distracting I feel. I guess I'm a little more "traditional" and would prefer a simpler stage set-up where the singing / acting shines through more. The state-of-the-art special effects goes very well with the futuristic universe which the story takes place in though.

Families with young kids who want to watch the show should also note that there are sudden and loud pyrotechnics used which may alarm the young ones. Lil Pumpkin {and frankly, us adults too!} was a little shocked when they went off but luckily didn't cry... I did see a kid hiding behind the seat in front of him!

After the show, we managed to go on an exclusive backstage tour to understand how the whole production is run. With 34 technicians, 5 stage managers and 39 performers from all around the world, it's quite a feat to pull-off the spectacular stage sets and special effects!

Did you know that most of the scenic elements were constructed in South America, then shopped and asssmbled here in Singapore? Or that the performers trained for 2 months before they got on stage? Or that the RWS Theatre has 5 underground levels?? Well, now you do! :)

These are the performers getting a debrief in their training room. It's hard to believe that just a few minutes ago, they were all dressed like they came from another universe!

This is the sewing room where most of the amazing costumes are made.. yes, being the third RWS production now, they have gained enough expertise to make most of the elaborate LightSeeker costumes in-house, unlike previous productions where they were made overseas! :) #golocal

The details and quality of each costume is amaaaazing~!

And so are the make-up details for each character, no matter the size of their roles.

Here we are with 2 of the mischevious imps. Lil Pumpkin also wanted a photo with the witch, Ursa, but she was already out of costume :P

This video shows more behind the scenes footage such as what the performers have to go through for each death-defying act, as well as introduction to the story by the production's Creator & Executive Producer Andrea Teo and Director Michael La Fleur.

Overall, we enjoyed watching the show together as a family and feel that it's important to support local productions. The magical musical will end its run on 23 Mar 2014, which is just about 2 weeks left so if you want to catch it, hurry before it's too late!
