Bub & Me: Rainbows & Washi Frames

Over the weekend we had a family dinner with my parents and in-laws to have a joint celebration for all our birthdays, as well as a belated Mother's Day gathering. I love that both our parents get along so well and meet up to chat and catch up with one another often.

Lil Pumpkin has been quite into drawing and painting rainbows lately. Perhaps because we saw a lovely rainbow on the way to work one day and it stuck in her mind! Anyway, they aren't, strictly-speaking, in the seven standard "rainbow" colours {red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.. in case you were wondering :P} but they are still very pretty and colourful.

I asked her to draw 4 rainbows for each of her grandparent, and I'd frame it up to give it as a little gift to them at the dinner. Sort of like a I-love-you-thank-you-for-taking-care-of-me-for-the-last-5-years kinda present :) I'm not sure how she chose the colours for each grandparent's rainbow, but they were each unique and she could tell them apart.

"That one is for Ah Kong.. and that one is for Ah Ma. Don't mix them up!!" Ok, my dear ^^V

For the grandpas, I got simple IKEA black frames and use these 3 washi tapes to give them some random accents. Washi tapes are an amazing, yet simple, way to embellish and add a pop of colour to different things. Love using them when crafting!

I thought my MT Peranakan tiles tape that I bought from MT Expo Singapore last year went very well with the black frame. I didn't want to cover the whole frames in washi tapes though as it would be too-overwhelming, but just to add a little pizazz :P

Did you know 3M Scotch released their own type of washi tapes not long ago? Yeah, Scotch tapes don't just come in the plain, clear matte designs anymore, but now have a new Expressions range of washi {paper-finish} and masking {matte, plastic finish} tapes with more than 55 colours and patterns inspired by current or classic trends.

I used these 3M Scotch Expressions tape for the grandmas' red frames. They are designed to stick on a wide variety of surfaces for both permanent and temporary applications and I was very pleased that even though I had to reposition some tapes, they removed cleanly and stuck on well again. No wastage :P

Found their version of the washi tapes to be as good as MT's actually... and that says a lot because MT from Japan is a very highly-regarded brand for washi tapes. Some washi tapes from generic brands are not sticky enough or can't be repositioned easily. You don't get that problem with 3M Scotch washi tapes. And like MT's, you can also write on them with a pen, pencil or marker.

I like blue & white chevron pattern a lot and even used it for Lil Pumpkin's birthday party goodie bags. The colours went along well with her Disney Frozen theme :) You can get these tapes from S$3.90-$9.90 at selected POPULAR bookstores and other leading retailers.

Wow, what a neat idea and that is an awesome way to customize something to a certain color scheme, etc. Plus the possibilities are endless.

I need to get me some of these washi tapes! I think I saw the 3M brand at my local grocery store the other day, but I zipped past in a hurry and didn't pay close attention. I will next time I am there though!

Very cute project!

Looks great! I would never have though to do that with photo frames but I am keen. I have some plain ones that I was thinking of painting but I might do that instead. #teamIBOT

Lovely ideas!
And it's just so great that both sets of parents get along well. So, do they talk about and compare their kids?? hehe.

I keep hearing about these washi tapes and their addictiveness so with my addiction to paper products and accessories I was too afraid to investigate! Gee you have been clever here though.

Hope Lil Pumpkin's party was a treat! #teamIBOT
