Rainbow Loom vs Monster Tail Loom. What is the Difference? + {Giveaway & Promo Code}

If you're following me on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook, you'd have probably realised I've a new addiction hobby *grins*

There is an emergence of a new toy craze now... And it's not just in Singapore. I've seen it on my Instagram feed from friends in Australia and US, and recently saw lots of shop selling it in Hong Kong too. It's not only well-loved by the kids, but by the mothers as well!! And yes, me included :P

I'm talking about the Rainbow Loom, which is basically a simple plastic ‘loom’ that you can strategically place tiny rubber bands on to connect, twist and loop into bracelets, necklaces, rings, dolls etc. It really is pretty amazing and has won the 2014 Toy of the Year Awards that is given out by the U.S. Toy Industry Association... kinda like the Oscars for toys!

I wasn't really that interested when I came across it a few months back because I thought some sewing skills & knowledge would be required since it's erm, a loom?? And if you're a long enough reader here, you'll know that this mama does not sew!! However, I saw some really cute Disney Princess-inspired dolls made with the Rainbow Loom which I knew Lil Pumpkin would love and that kinda sold it for me. By hook or by crook, I will master it for her!!! #poweroflove

The kit comes with 1 Rainbow Loom, 1 mini Rainbow Loom {the blue cover on the hook}, 1 metal hook, C-clips, instructions and about 600 pieces of mixed colour latex-free rubber bands {enough to make about 24 bracelets}. Everything you need to get you started on this new hobby!

I started making some simple "jewelry" for Lil Pumpkin first and was really surprised that it's so easy!

By the third day, I got rather ambitious and thought I'd try my hand at making other things and the cute Rainbow Loom dolls. It was definitely more complicated and I took about 2 hours to make Baby Ariel. There was some muck-up but you can't really tell, right?

I also got my hands on the new Monster Tail Loom that was released just last month. Its kit is similar to the Rainbow Loom as it comes with the C-clips, instructions and about 600 pieces mixed colour latex-free rubber bands. However, instead of the Rainbow Loom, you'll get a smaller Monster Tail Loom, and instead of 1 metal hook, you'll get 1 plastic hook.

So... what's the difference and which to buy??

Both looms are handy in various ways, and really depends on your needs and favourite loom designs. I'd say get both if you can since they aren't that expensive and it's more fun to be able to loom together with the kids, instead of just watching them do it! However, if you need some help choosing, here's a little comparison:

The Monster Tail Loom is more compact which makes it great for travel, or if the kids want to bring it over to a friend's place so that they can loom together. I like to use it as well when I just want to sit back, relax and not work over a table, as you need to do with the Rainbow Loom.

If you or your kids like to loom just bracelets and small charms, the Monster Tail Loom will also suffice. It was built specifically for making the elaborate "tail" type bracelets {fishtail, quadfish, hexafish, etc.} and it works so much better and faster compared to using the Rainbow Loom when making those.

But, if you prefer to work with a wider space and want to loom more elaborate items like dolls, handphone covers, bags {yes, you can!!}, then get the original Rainbow Loom first. There are a gazillion tutorials already online and popping up daily that can help you to loom the design you like.

I also like that the Rainbow Loom kit comes with the metal hook that makes looming much easier as you can "hook" the bands faster because of the sharper tip, and it's stronger especially when you need to hook a lot of bands together. Do note that you can purchase the metal hook separately too though for S$11.90.

These craft toys are recommended for kids aged 8 and above, however kids aged 5-7 can still use it with adult supervision. Lil Pumpkin helped to make the easier bracelets, but the other charms and dolls are obviously too difficult for her.

However, she really likes to play with them and I like to see her smile with the finished products too :) When making the dolls especially, I've to be careful about getting the colours and details correct. She's quite particular about them haha. "How come Elsa's hair is yellow and not white???" she says. Well, technically both of us are correct since Elsa's hair is platinum blonde.. so by right "yellow" is fine, but it's so light "white" would be a better choice.

One thing to be aware of when purchasing Rainbow Loom products is that there are a lot of counterfeits around and they look very similar to the original products. The key difference would be counterfeits are inferior in quality {breaks easily, sharp and rough edges} and have not been tested in accordance with established toy safety standards and therefore may contain lead and other dangerous substances which are unsafe for children. There have been reports of the fake loom pins breaking and causing hurt to the kids.

Counterfeit bands are also less stretchy, less smooth and breaks easily.. imagine the frustration if you are halfway through a project!! Locally, I saw some shops selling for S$3.50/pack for 300 pieces. An original Rainbow Loom rubber band pack costs S$6.90 for 600 pieces {and S$7.90 for 300 silicone bands}. The price difference is really, non-existent so no point bothering with fakes if cost is your concern.

You can read more on how to spot the counterfeits here but your best bet to get originals would be to purchase from the official Rainbow Loom Singapore online store or other authorised dealers like Playhao {Forum}, My Toy Shop {Jelita}, Twelve by Elly {Cluny Court} and Smart Alley {Changi City Point}.

Promo code: Quote "sakura" for 10% off ALL Rainbow Loom products {includes kits, rubber bands, hooks, Loomey Time watches etc.} in the Rainbow Loom Singapore online store. Valid until 30 June 2014 only, one-time use with each email add. Free shipping to Singapore addresses for orders above nett S$30.

I got these compact containers from Daiso to store my rubber bands. It comes in a set of 9, which is just nice for the starter pack that has 9 colours in the kits.

Just for my special blog readers and friends only, I have TWO Kits from Rainbow Loom to give away! Choose either a Rainbow Loom Kit {worth S$29.90} or a Monster Tail Loom Kit {worth S$19.90}. 1 winner will be chosen for each kit.
