Prepping for P1: New Haircut for the New Year!

Last Monday we brought Lil Pumpkin down to see Berne, our usual hairstylist, to cut her loooooooong hair.

Cutting your kids' hair may not be a very big deal but to us, it kinda is. The boy always said that Lil Pumpkin's long hair is her "trademark". When people meet her for the first time, they are always so amazed by her long, luscious hair that reaches past her butt line. How is it that this small little girl has such long hair???

Most Chinese friends will ask if we shaved her head when she was a baby {because the Chinese believe that doing so makes the hair grow back stronger & thicker} but no, we didn't. It's purely genetics and truth is, I only trim it maybe only once, at most twice a year. And usually after much nagging from my own mum who thinks that having long hair is a drag and such a hassle to tie-up and keep tidy.

I'm the one who usually has to comb / tie Lil Pumpkin's hair up and don't see what's the big deal about it {plus I've always wanted long hair for myself!!} but since Lil Pumpkin is going to Primary 1 next year and should know how to tie her own hair / keep it neat especially since her new school has strict rules about grooming & decorum, having a shorter hairstyle will be much easier for her to handle.

Lil Pumpkin loves having long hair because her fave Disney Princess characters i.e. Ariel, Rapunzel, Elsa, all have long hair.

However, she was also very excited to go and get a "professional haircut" actually!! Her first major one!! She's usually there when I cut my hair with Berne and knows the drill - hair wash, blow-dry, hair cut, hair styling - so was all ready to get eager to get "pampered" and treated like a Princess too! ( ⋂‿⋂’)

This was the first time Berne cut Lil Pumpkin's hair. Now he is officially the hairstylist for our whole family hahahahah #thankyou

I wasn't really keen on bringing Lil Pumpkin to a kids hair salon because I reckon it's a waste of money?? I mean, you're paying more for the frills of keeping your kid quiet entertained during the haircut instead of the hairstylist's skills and hair-styling experience. If I'm gonna fork out a good amount of money for a job that I usually do for free {hah!}, I'd rather have someone I trust handling Lil Pumpkin's hair and if Berne is good enough for me, he's good enough for Lil Pumpkin *grins*

I usually give Lil Pumpkin a quick snip and wasn't sure how long she'd be able to sit for the whole haircut session. She was a real trooper and managed to sit still {with a few butt wiggles and big yawns} for around 1.5hrs though!! (●→‿ฺ←●)

Seriously wasn't expecting it to be that long but oh well, it's Berne. He takes every hair cut seriously. Even for kids.

Very delighted with her haircut and admiring her new hairstyle in the mirror (♥◕ฺ∀◕ฺ)

So sleek and chic!!! ♥ We couldn't bear to go too short so just cut off about 15cm and layered the ends. It really does look much neater now and is much lighter!!

You can see part of her haircut session in the short video above. If it's not working, watch it on my YouTube channel here

Yes, I know there's still about 3 more weeks before she starts P1 but knowing Berne, his salon will be so crazy crowded during year's end and I don't think we'll have time to go down just before school starts too. Hope her hair won't get too wild by then!

Oh ya, in case you missed it, I cut my hair a few weeks ago too after Lil Pumpkin's P1 orientation. A short pixie bob.

LOVING IT!!! (-^〇^-)

Prepping for P1: 25 Tips & Advice from the School

We went for Lil Pumpkin's P1 school orientation last weekend and I really found it soooo helpful in helping us prep for her P1 journey in her new school. P1 orientations are usually in the last 2 weeks of November, some during weekdays and some on Saturdays like us.

If you have a kid that's going to P1, I strongly suggest that you don't miss their orientations! School nowadays is vastly different from when we were in the system. There are some administrative work to be done, books/ uniforms to purchase and it's a good opportunity for the kids {and parents!} to get to know their new teachers, classmates and school.

Lil Pumpkin's new school gave out very handy tips and advice to help the children fit into the school culture. I've listed some of the general ones below for my own memory, and although not all may apply to you, hopefully some might be helpful in enabling your kid to enjoy her new school life, or at least encourage you to find out the answers to some of these topics if they weren't covered during your orientation

*****

Personal Items

1. Purses, textbooks, files, water-bottles, lunchboxes etc. must have the your kid's name and class written on them with a permanent ink marker or labeled with stickers. This will enable the school to trace the owners should the items be found in common areas.

2. Help the school to inculcate the values of responsibility and thrift in the children. Please help your kid to look for lost items at the Lost & Found area and not supply them with new items too quickly.

Transport

3. P1 pupils tend to get confused when parents change their plans and do not adhere to regular transport arrangement. If your kid is taking the school bus home, don't take them home even if you are free, at least for the first 3 months.

4. If there is an urgent need to take your kid home yourself, remember to inform the bus driver so that other children do not have to be inconvenienced while the bus driver looks for your kid.

5. Advise your kid on how you can be reached from school if they miss the bus. Update your contact numbers in her school diary and alert her teachers as well.

Canteen and Food

6. P1 pupils should not buy food with hot soup, until they are more confident of themselves.

7. Kids should drink plenty of plain water. Do not put sweet drinks in your kid's water bottle.

8. Encourage healthy eating in your kid. Refrain from packing potato crisps / crackers in their lunch boxes and pack a fruit or give them extra pocket money to purchase a piece of fruit.

9. Make sure the kids eat a proper breakfast before school starts.

Health

10. All immunisation booster doses should be finished before the kid starts school in January. Check the health booklet for confirmation.

11. Pupils who are sick should not attend school. If they are taken ill in school, he/she will be taken to the sick bay. The school staff will contact one of the parents to take the child to the doctor. If anyone else is picking the child up, they need to register at the General Office.

12. Schools cannot administer any medication, so all necessary medication should be placed in the kid's bag. Emergency medication should be in a pouch to be carried at all times. Train the kid on how to use or administer the medication.

13. In an emergency, the school will immediately send for an ambulance and will not wait to contact the parent. A school staff will accompany the child to the hospital and the parent will be informed to meet them there.

Hygiene

14. Sometimes the kids may dirty themselves and the toilet while doing their business. They should inform the teacher to help them get a change of uniforms and to clean the toilet for the next user. Teach them to understand that there is no shame to be in need of help.

School Bags

15. Keep bags light. Parents can supervise the pupils in packing of their school bags daily but let them do it themselves.

16. When you buy the bags, water-bottles, pencil boxes etc., consider the weight of these items. Water-bottles can be brought to school empty and filled up at the school water-coolers.

17. Trolley bags and big bags are not encouraged. Not only are they heavy, they are dangerous to carry up and down the stairs.

18. Encourage your kid to pack in a light paperback book for reading during spare pockets of time.

At Home

19. Set up a study area in their bedrooms or in an area away from distractions e.g. TV. This is where all books, stationery, time-tables, school calendar should be kept so that the kids can quickly pack their belongings every day in preparation for school the next day. Help them to get into the habit of doing work here and be responsible for their own school day.

20. Do not keep computers and laptops in their private study area, but in common areas so that you can supervise the sites they visit.

21. Help them get excited for school by trying out the uniforms often, and don't tell them scare stories about your own school days. Try not to transfer your own fears and anxiety onto the kids.

22. Let your kids learn how to make friends and deal with friendship issues. At the same time, teach your kids on how to deal with bullies. If you suspect there is bullying going on in school, inform the teacher and work with the school. Do not take things into your own hands and approach any child in a threatening manner.

23. Train your kids to finish food in 20 minutes by timing them. They may want to play during recess but let them understand that they must finish the food first {with proper chewing} before playing with their friends.

24. At least one week before school starts, train your kids going to bed and getting up at a fixed time. Let them practice their morning routine so that they know exactly what to do when school starts, even if you're not around.

25. As much as possible, teach them how to handle money and how to buy things on their own. If you forget to give your kid pocket money, tell them to approach her class teacher and to remember to inform you about this so that the amount can be returned promptly to the teacher.

What other useful tips and advice did your child's school tell you for P1 preparation?
Are you going to pack lunchboxes for your kids?
What did you think of their new schools and teachers???

Prepping for P1: School Orientation Experience

Last Saturday, we went down to my alma mater for Lil Pumpkin's Primary 1 school orientation!! It was all very exciting and informational. Everything ran smoothly like a well-oiled machine and it was hardly as time-consuming and chaotic as I thought it might be.

Orientation was supposed to be from 9 - 11.30am and we reached there about 8.45am. A crowd was already forming and as soon as we registered Lil Pumpkin, she was whisked away by some teachers to join the other p1-to-be kids for their own school tour and program to get to know the teachers and new classmates. I'm glad that we'd prepped Lil Pumpkin to give a mini self-intro of herself hehe.

Having the little ones away was a fantastic arrangement so that the parents didn't have to worry about tending to them and could fully concentrate on the school briefing on things to take note for the first few weeks of school, transport / traffic arrangements, parent volunteering, Co-Curricular Activities {CCAs} etc. as well as chat with other parents.

It was very heartwarming to hear the school principal talk about my alma mater's mission and vision to mould the little girls into women of substance and stature in a very complex world susceptible to unpredictable change. Beyond academic achievements, the school focuses on giving a holistic education and I'm glad that throughout all these years, every single school teacher and staff has kept to that. I noticed that quite a few of my old teachers were still around too!

This is the kind of education I want Lil Pumpkin to enjoy and I can't wait for her to join this sisterhood and have her own meaningful schooling experience in my alma mater *beams*

After the briefing we had a chance to visit Lil Pumpkin's new classroom and finish up some administrative tasks.

I love that her new classroom is so spacious and airy! When I showed this photo to some of my old school friends, they asked if these were the same tables and chairs we used as kids haha. I don't think so??! I mean, they are still in pretty good condition so I guess they must be relatively new (´ω`)ノ

We were informed by her teachers that the kids will be keeping most of their books in class {MUST. LABEL. EVERYTHING.} so that they don't have to worry about forgetting books and lug them to school and back home. That's a real luxury we didn't have during my time!

With textbooks kept in class, I wondered about the need for revision and reading ahead to prep for new study topics but I guess in P1 they don't have to?? We'll see how the system goes when school starts. Anyway I'm glad that Lil Pumpkin doesn't need to carry a heavy load to school each day too. Big schoolbags are a thing of the past now! #phew

While I was filling up some forms, the boy went to get the required school books and supplies to save us some time.

To facilitate the huge crowd, her school bookshop operated from a classroom that day and other than the things in the bookl ist, they sold assessment books, ergonomic school bags, pens, files, and even shoes!

The bookshop is managed by Pacific Bookstores so if your school is by this same provider, don't worry if you don't have the schoolbags or any school supplies yet. You can get them during orientation. It was a real breeze getting everything on the book list because they are all prepacked into a box! The boy told me that all you have to do is queue to pay for the box. After that, you just move on to another counter to either remove things you don't need, or add on other supplies you want and get back / make up the monetary difference.

They also make name stamps and name stickers for the kids!! So convenient and these are pretty much a must-have nowadays as mentioned by other parents in my 20 Tips for Kids Entering P1 list.

The name stamps start from S$5 and name stickers from S$2 for 24 pieces. The stickers may not be as well-made or lasting as those from Stickerkid or Bright Star Kids, but they are definitely wayyyy cheaper and have a wider range of Disney character prints.

The school uniform vendors were set up in the canteen. They accepted card and cash payment.

We'd already bought Lil Pumpkin's school uniforms from Bibi & Baba earlier this month so didn't have to worry about that but if you do need to get them during orientation, I suggest waiting for about an hour after the orientation ends so that there's less of a crowd and you can get your kids to try on the uniforms for sizes in relative peace.

Since it was the weekend, the main food stalls weren't open but the snacks and drink stalls were. We let Lil Pumpkin buy her own food from the stalls by herself (♥◕ฺ∀◕ฺ)

I like that all the snacks and drinks had prices clearly marked out. Took the time to check out the prices at the rest of the main food stalls too. Wow prices have certainly increased since my time when noodles only cost S$0.50/bowl and S$0.20 could get me a packet of Chickadees or Mamee snack haha.

Food prices for main meals in her canteen ranges from S$0.80 - S$1.50, drinks are S$0.50 - S$1.30 and fruits are S$0.30 - S$0.50. The school recommends giving the kid S$2/day if they are buying food from school during recess.

For the first 2 weeks, there will be a P5 buddy to help guide the P1 kids in the canteen system. We'd encourage her to buy food then to get some practice with a mentor while she can but after that, I intend to prepare an obento {see over 50 obento ideas here} for her as her recess is only 30 mins long and at least for the first part of the year, she probably won't be used to the system and have enough time to eat after going to the toilet, queuing, finding a seat to eat etc. She'd still have pocket money though just in case she does want to buy food.

However when I asked her, she said she preferred if I packed food for her too.... more time for her to eat fast and play with friends! (●→‿ฺ←●)

This is the big "goodie box" of her P1 books for both semester 1 & 2, and supplies. The cost might differ from school to school based on what's in the book list, but all in we spent about S$200 because we bought extra exercise books too. If you don't want to buy during orientation and carry it home, you can also order online from Pacific Bookstores website and have it delivered.

The site is usually ready in early November, which is before most P1 school orientation dates. If you know that they are your kids' school bookshop operator, you can check their website for the book list and need not wait for the school to give it to you. But please confirm with the school first if you can do this in case there's any changes!

I made sure the boy opened up to check that each and every book that was in the booklist was properly included haha.

It might be cheaper? to get her art and stationery supplies required in the book list outside, but we bought them all together for convenience sake since they were all already pre-packed.

Oh the P1-to-be kids were also given a lovely book published by the Ministry of Education {MOE} filled with tips and fun activities to prep them for their new journey ahead! So so helpful and something I know that she'd love to work on for the rest of the holidays ♥

I feel much more prepared now for her P1 journey after attending the school orientation. Lil Pumpkin, on the other hand, is even more excited to start school and can't wait for January to come!! I hope her enthusiasm for school lasts for a long, long time haha.

Let me know how your P1 orientation experience went too! ( ^_^)/

Prepping for P1: School Uniforms Shopping @ Bibi & Baba, Orchard Road

Call me crazy {or kiasu haha} but last weekend we went to buy Lil Pumpkin's Primary 1 school uniforms!! Actually I was very excited to buy them even much earlier after her school registration was confirmed but our schedule got pretty hectic.

As with many other local schools, Lil Pumpkin's school uniforms are supplied by Bibi & Baba. Oh the memories!! During my time, my school uniforms were from Bibi & Baba too.

Established in 1947, the company began as a children's dress shop, which was then called Majestic. They then manufactured sportswear, jeans, shirts etc. and even exported to overseas fashion floors of Macy’s or Marks & Spencer!! But then in the late 90s industry changes made it too expensive to continue with this business model and they focused more on supplying uniforms locally to schools, hospitals and corporations.

The boy was saying, "why make us take such a tourist shot??" haha... Hey, it's our first time buying her primary school uniforms and I will take as many photos as I want to capture the memories! (⌒∇⌒。)

I don't remember buying my school uniforms at Orchard when I was younger but since 2012, Bibi & Baba set up a retail shop at Far East Shopping Centre. So convenient!!

Next month will be pretty busy with her K2 graduation party, P1 orientation, our next holiday {hurray!}, Seussical the Musical etc. and I usually try to avoid the Christmas shopping crowd in Orchard during December so it was probably best that we got her uniforms and whatever else we needed for her new school term {excluding the textbooks} this month.

I think the uniforms will be sold during orientation but I'm sure there will be a whole swarm of parents / kids waiting to try the sizes and order.. so we might as well get it over and done with.

It was very easy to go to the shop - just up the escalator from the sidewalk and turn left.

Bibi & Baba generally supplies the school uniforms, PE t-shirts, PE shorts, house polo shirts, ties, hats and even socks for a fair number of local schools. Each school has their own restrictions though and for some, you must buy certain items directly from the school e.g. school badges and house t-shirts.

The various school uniform sample sizes are neatly hung up on racks and if you're there for the first time like us, you can try on the uniforms for the right fit. The salesladies will recommend sizes if you need help too.

When we went around 6pm on a weekend, there was only 1 other customer but soon after, a crowd started coming in. The shop isn't very big, plus there are only 2 changing rooms to try on the uniforms, so try to go during non-peak season i.e. weekdays, and not so close to when school term starts.

I decided to get Lil Pumpkin 3 sets of school uniforms and 2 sets of PE attire as for her school, the students are allowed to wear the PE attire the whole day if they have PE lessons for the day. This should be sufficient for the whole week.

Size-wise, I got them a size up as she'll probably grow a bit by the time January comes and I want her uniforms to last at least a year (♥◕ฺ∀◕ฺ)ノ゚ The cost of each uniform will differ with each school but just to give you an idea, her uniform costs about $30/set and PE attire about S$17/set.

Obviously I'm not going to post photos of her in her new school uniforms for privacy reasons, but just to share that when I saw her in them for the first time, I got pretty emo. So so so surreal... showed them with my friends and some of them said that she looks just like me as a little school girl last time!! hahaha

Lil Pumpkin loves her new school uniforms too and is looking forward to starting primary school. I'm thrilled that she's embracing this new chapter of her life so wholeheartedly! ♥

Tips for buying {your first} school uniforms:
  • Try to go during non-peak periods i.e. weekdays and not near starting of terms
  • Bring your child along to try for sizes, especially if you're buying school uniforms for the first time
  • Call in advance to check that they have stock for your required uniforms
  • Kids will grow so buy as large as you can without your child looking awkward {1-2 sizes up}. You can always hem the bottoms or add elastic waistbands.
  • No need to buy in excess as they will grow, and you can always buy more later. 3 sets of uniforms & 3-4 sets of PE attire {heard some P1 kids wear them 4 times a week} should be sufficient for 5 school days especially for lower primary, even if you don't do any washing for the week.
  • There's a sign inside the Bibi & Baba store that says you need to fill up a form then bring it to the cashier to order. I guess that's if you wait for school orientation and they will give you an order form but it's not necessary.
  • Bibi & Baba accepts cash, Nets and credit card payments.
  • If you already know your child's uniform size, you can also order from Bibi & Baba's new school uniforms online store and have them delivered to you directly {S$7 delivery charge for local addresses}. It just launched so selection is limited.
  • There are uniform size charts available for some schools on the website so you can pop by to have a look for reference before you head down to the shops to try as well.
  • Bibi & Baba also offers made-to-measure uniforms.
  • Goods sold are non-refundable, but exchangeable within 14 days with receipt.

Bibi & Baba @ Orchard

Prepping for P1: Our School Registration Experience

We went through our first hurdle for Lil Pumpkin's primary school journey on Tuesday when we had to register her for Primary 1 {P1}.

In Singapore, children who will turn 7 before 2 Jan of the following year must be registered in the Singapore Primary One Registration Exercise of the current year. The Registration Exercise is divided into 7 phases with the earlier phases giving priority to students who are already affiliated to the schools because of their parents or siblings. You can read more about the different registration phases here. We registered under 2A(1) as parents who are alumni of the school.

Even when I was a young doe-eyed girl dreaming about love, and my future marriage & kids, I knew that if I had a daughter, I wanted her to go to my alma mater. At that time, I wasn't thinking so far ahead that if she got into my school, which many would deem as a "good school", it would help her advance better in life. It wasn't about being "strategic" to make sure that she could in turn get into our affiliated secondary school, then junior college and in turn have a better chance at university.

It was more because I love my alma mater and wanted my future daughter{s} to have the same happy experience I had growing up in school too. It was about the memories of learning from my dedicated teachers, the fun times I had with my friends in class, at camps and playing during recess, the opportunity to grow closer to God, and the strong ties I formed with all my "sisters" in school... even up to this day.

And those feelings haven't changed since I was a young girl. I want Lil Pumpkin to be part of that strong sisterhood, close-knit family, and proud tradition. My mum gave me this precious gift of being educated there, and I want to pass on this gift to Lil Pumpkin. She's been back a few times for various occasions to see her {hopefully} future school {pic above is from her first visit when she was 2 years old} and likes it too.

I knew that there have been many parents who have been calling on the Ministry of Education {MOE} to review the P1 registration exercise and to call away with the priority rule for those with alumni, parent volunteers, church and clan connections. I understand their concerns and where they are coming from but as someone who wants to use my alumni ties to get Lil Pumpkin into my alma mater, it was quite disconcerting. I couldn't help but feel - why do people find it so wrong to want to send our kids back to the school where we came from and love??? Why can't we pass on that tradition to our children and let them experience the same care we had from our old school we helped to build??

Anyway for 6 years I hoped and prayed hard that there won't be any changes to the system and in 2013, MOE announced that 40 places in every school should be set aside for children without family connections, resulting in fewer places for the earlier phases.

Last year, 4 primary schools had to ballot for the first time in 2 decades in the Phase 2A(2), the phase allocated for children whose parents are former students {but not alumni association members} of the schools they are applying for. That certainly gave me a jolt as it hit pretty close to home.

There was a little fear that Lil Pumpkin wouldn't get in, but there was no Plan B. I couldn't really imagine her not being in my alma mater!! Un-un-un-un-unbelievable~

In any case, we prepared as best as we could and got all our required documents and photocopies ready at least a month early. Actually my mum passed me my PSLE cert and old report book wayyyyyy in advance like 1-2 years back?? haha. She was as nervous as I was!!

The night before Registration Day the boy went through at least 3 times all our required documents and photocopies, and even packed in our Marriage Cert just in case. You wouldn't need that though, unless you are separated or divorced from your spouse.

I could not sleep much that night and kept tossing and turning. On Registration Day, we went bright and early to my alma mater to register and reached about 8.30am. Even though it was just half an hour since registration opened, we were already #17 in queue!

Since the boy and I took leave, we also brought along Lil Pumpkin for the experience {my parents brought me for my P1 registration too} and my mum also surprised us by coming down to support us

Everything went by quickly since we had all the documents were neatly sorted so the admin clerk just had to do a quick check and we finished our registration within 10 minutes from the time our number was called. All in all, it took just about 30 minutes from the start.

After that we went to my old canteen to have some breakfast! There were some changes, but most of the old vendors were still there... even the red bowl auntie!!! How nostalgic~

We left the school to run some errands and visit the old mosaic Clock Playground in Bishan. In the afternoon, I heard from some fellow parents that results would be posted at 7pm that very night so from 7pm, I refreshed the MOE School Vacancy by Phases page almost every minute to check.

About 8pm, the page was finally updated with the number of students registered for Phase 2(A)1 and since the number of students registered for my alma mater was less than the number of vacancies available for that phase, that meant that Lil Pumpkin was in!! Well.. I was 99% certain and left 1% in case sh*t happened.

The official results on balloting status came out yesterday and yes, it was confirmed that Lil Pumpkin was going to be part of my alma mater since we didn't need to ballot. Wooohoooo!!! ・( ̄∀ ̄)・:*:

I was absolutely relieved and cried tears of joy!!! The boy thought that I was crazy for crying since Lil Pumpkin was accepted but you know... it was quite stressful what with all the waiting and worrying that the dream I held in my heart for nearly 20 years would be dashed.

Nowadays, even as a school alumni member, it does not guarantee you a spot in your alma mater and this year, one of the schools {CHIJ St. Nicholas} has to conduct balloting at Phase 2A(1) for the first time in history since this system started, because they were oversubscribed. I suspect this will happen more frequently as the years go by.

Whatever it is, I'm just really thrilled for Lil Pumpkin and am very excited for her to go to primary school. Yes, I still have the parenting jitters on whether she is ready or not to cope with the higher academic demands and responsibility of being primary school kid, but I have comfort in knowing that she is on familiar grounds {with some familiar friends!} and will have my nurturing alma mater to care and support her in her schooling days Mummy is really, really happy for you my dear Lil Pumpkin!! Is it too early to want to buy your school uniform next week?? :P

Are you taking part in P1 registration this year or
do you already have kids in primary school?
How was your experience in choosing the schools and registering?

P.S. I can only imagine how much more stressful it is for parents who have to register their kids in the later phases and I sincerely wish you all the best in being successful in the schools you've chosen for your children. Good luck and 頑張って!! (^д^)凸

P.P.S. No matter which school our kids attend, we must still buy for them the same school supplies and resources. Here's a list of 20 Things to Buy For Kids Entering Primary 1 from the parents, for other parents to help you relieve the stress of that!

20 Things to Buy for Kids Entering Primary 1 | from parents for parents

I guess Primary 1 registration is on the mind of all local parents with kids born in 2009. Stress level is high these few weeks as registration officially starts but no matter which school our kids attend, we must still buy for them the same school supplies and resources.

I believe it's always better to prepare in advance, rather than panic later when we can't find the things we need. Besides, shopping is a way to relieve stress so why not hit the shops while the Great Singapore Sale {GSS} is still on to get their school bags early and score some great savings! It ends on 26 July 2015 by the way.

Since Lil Pumpkin is our first child, I didn't really know what to get but I asked my fellow parents  what their must-buy items {outside the school book-list} are and they gladly shared with me their wisdom and experience {thank you!}. To all the would-be Primary 1 parents, hope you'll this list of 20 Things to Buy For Kids Entering Primary 1 from the parents, for other parents just as helpful!

*****

1. We have few kinds of name labels. One is just the name. Another is the name and the class our child is in. For textbooks we paste the "name and class" labels. For stationary or bottles, we use just the "name" stickers. - Mummy Jazry

2. I will get a new school bag for her to mark the new journey. - Mummy Siew Tiang

3. New wallet (get kid's fave characters, if possible). - Mummy Meteorice

4. Definitely a good pencil case well equipped with pencils, ruler, eraser and scissors. - Mummy Lynn

5. All P1 kids need a new toy to bring to school. They can use the toy as an ice-breaker to get to know other new kid and make new friends. - Daddy Vincent

6. Ergonomic backpacks - Mummy Adeline

7. Hair accessories that are in approved colours! - Mummy Lyn

8. Multi-pocket file for memo, spelling list n worksheets. - Mummy Janice

9. I will get my girl a zipper folder so that she can place her communication book and important papers from the teachers inside. - Mummy Juliana

10. Need to get my girl white shoes & socks (unless school has specially printed ones). - Mummy Tammy

11. Plastic wrapper for books. - Mummy Diana

12. More erasers and pencils on standby. - Mummy Joanna

13. White polisher to polish and keep theirs shoes white!!! I remember I used to do that every weekend.... Wash my shoes and then apply white polisher. - Mummy Jamie

14. Small Notebook for the children to take down little notes. - Mummy Sandra

15. I would buy and stock up 5 water bottles for P1. A common item that's often lost or forgotten. - Mummy Karen

16. I think a good pair of school shoes is important to keep the kids comfortable as they hardly wear shoes in childcare and it may be a huge change for them. - Mummy Mag

17. A pretty analog watch to help them learn to tell time correctly. - Mummy Nadia

18. I would say a key-chain that represents you or carries fond memories between you and your girl! She is able to carry it in school, reminding her you are thinking of her and she doesn't have to be afraid in a big unfamiliar school because you are there with her. Basically, it will act as her mummy's protective charm! - Mummy Wei Ting

19. A cutie lunchbox filled with filled with mum's kitchen breakfast & include a lunchbox note too!!! - Mummy Mabel

20. Make them a name stamp. - Mummy Germaine

Good luck to all of us at the Primary 1 school registration!!!

Prepping for P1: Comparison of Popular Maths Enrichment Classes in Singapore

It is the Primary 1 registration period in Singapore now and I've been following the news on this topic lately since Lil Pumpkin is going to register next year. I've also started going into the Kiasuparents forum to read up more on other people's experiences on registering their child, and how they get their kids prepared for entry into our formal schooling system.

Kiasuparents is like a scabby wound. You know you're not supposed to keep picking at it {i.e keep reading the forum} since it'll cause you more stress, or even distress, but you just can't help it :P

{source}
I've been thinking of sending Lil Pumpkin to Math enrichment classes to improve her math skills. Her answers are very "creative" but frankly, I think her teachers won't appreciate it haha

I'd like to be one of those parents that come up with their own fabulous worksheets and games to home-school Lil Pumpkin as well but as a full-time working parent, that is simply not possible without me losing my sanity. It's not just that I don't have the time, it's also because I understand I don't have the skills and patience. Looking at some of the primary school maths problems nowadays, it looks very different from how we used to learn it in school. Everybody has their own limits, and I know mine.

I'm worried that Lil Pumpkin may not be able to catch up with her class in Primary 1 and feel some sort of "culture shock" and stress since currently, we don't emphasize on her doing any structured studies at home. So, we'd like to start early and build her foundation, slow and steady, then let her feel the need to rush and catch up.

That's how we felt when we enrolled her in her Chinese enrichment class too. It was a good move as now she can at least understand, and communicate simply in Chinese. She can recognise a lot of Chinese words too and best part is, Lil Pumpkin is interested to learn more!

Choosing a Chinese enrichment class was pretty easy for us. We didn't really research much into it, and chose her school because it seemed pretty reputable, we liked their curriculum plus they had a convenient location / class time for us so we enrolled her in one without much fuss early in Nursery 2.

{source}
I thought it'd be as easy for choosing a Maths enrichment class as well. My colleague's daughter is learning CMA and Kumon is a pretty popular choice. So I thought it's just between these 2. Easy peasy. And then I started to check it out in Kiasuparents and realised there's many more choices!!! Arrrgggghhh!!

I spent about 2-3 days reading through all the forum threads, researching other online sources and calling the centres. It's not so much that I want to look for the best one, because I don't think there really is one... only one that suits your child the best. What we want for Lil Pumpkin is to make Maths-learning fun for her, and to get the ball rolling on building her strong foundation and good study habits in Maths. Like how we did for her Chinese.

Admittedly, some parents start their kids on enrichment programs early because they want their kids to be the top scorers in school. However, most, like us, join these programs because they have no time to come up with the materials at home and still want their child to learn more and follow some sort of structure.

I still believe in letting her enjoy her childhood, but maybe I am a kiasu parent, after all :P

Here's what I found for my own reference, and for others who may find it useful. It's not my own personal experience so I cannot vouch for some of the comments I've featured. Details for each enrichment class are gathered from information online and from calling the various centers.

Of course there are more choices than what I've listed here, but these seem the most talked-about now. All information is correct at the time of this post, but feel free to contact me if anything needs updating.

Designed for preschoolers to P6.

A mum said "2 books to complete each week (the booklets are very colourful, compared to Kumon). You can take 1 book in a day (classes 2x/week) or 2 books in a day (classes 1x/week). Student have to complete about 9 pages in each booklet in the centre (with teacher guidence) and the next 9 pages have to be completed at home. Then submit the booklets the following week. JEI Singapore & PSLEMath Website: http://pslemath.com.sg/

Method Origin: JEI- Korea and PSLE Math- Singapore

Diagnostic test: Yes (less an hr), can start from age 4

Method: Students start with JEI until P1. JEI’s comprehensive diagnostic system will analyze each student’s test results and prescribe an individual study program. The individualized learning program is tailored to each student’s needs and abilities and creates the optimal educational environment. Each student learns at his or her own pace so that each new concept and skill is mastered thoroughly before progressing to the next level.

PSLEMath is a Singapore based programme from P2 onwards, done together with JEI. It was first developed jointly with ex-school teachers and PSLE markers. The strength of this programme lies in its systematic method of classifying complex heuristic problem sums in a manner to make learning, understanding and revision more efficient and simple. PSLEMath achieves this by organising the questions first by topics and then further by types. Math problems of the same types have similar approaches and concepts. By structuring its work books in this manner, PSLEMath's work books provide sufficient practice for children to apply their learning several times.

A mum said "looking at the materials for the JEI part, I feel they are much better than enopi or mpm as they are very intensive (looks like 15-20pgs), colorful and a few questions on each page, pictorial yet very relevant to spore syllabus. and the best part is u can bring the materials home, unlike enopi or mpm

For psle math its purely problem sums (cos the basic math is under the JEI bklet) and incorporates heuristics sums."

They also do diagnostic test regularly and can adjust the booklets according to each individual quickly.

Math Monkey Website: http://www.mathmonkey.com.sg/

Method Origin: India or South Asia

Diagnostic test: Yes (15-30 mins interview - skill assessments & verbal questions)

Method: Based on the philosophy that FUN is the key to learning, Vedic Math concepts are taught using carefully designed games and tools. The Math Monkey Curriculum is the culmination of more than 36 years' of research and teaching experience in Vedic Math of Professor Kenneth Williams. He has been widely regarded as the 'guru' of Vedic Math. He believes that children shouldn't have to rely on a calculator or pencil and paper for something the mind is capable of doing without them.

There are three components to the Math Monkey Programs:
- Use of games in Math Monkey classes: Children are encouraged to think on their toes in order to be able to play the games. As a result, learning occurs and math skills are greatly enhanced.
- Sharpening of concentration and memory skills: Classes are conducted primarily without the use of pencil and paper. This will build mental math ability of the children.
- Continued learning at home through weekly home assignments. These home assignments allow practice between lessons and provide teachers with feedback on the student's retention and progress.

Follow MOE syllabus: Some topics covered

Duration: 1x/week, 1hrs

Homework: Yes

Centres: Only at East Coast Road, Novena, Jurong East

Class size: 6:1

Monthly fee:  S$450 per term of 12 weeks

Overall,  we'd like Lil Pumpkin to attend a class where learning is fun and interactive, and the concepts are explained to her, rather than drilled into her brain. We'd like her to understand the concepts, not just memorise them. Thus, we're leaning towards JEI/PSLE Math or Maths Monkey now.

However, we haven't not fully decided yet as it will also depend on the location and schedule of available classes. Will see how it goes and hopefully enroll her in a class by year's end.

Are your kids attending any Maths enrichment classes now?
If yes, which one and how do you find it?
If not, how do you practise Maths with them?
