Prepping for P1: New Haircut for the New Year!

Last Monday we brought Lil Pumpkin down to see Berne, our usual hairstylist, to cut her loooooooong hair.

Cutting your kids' hair may not be a very big deal but to us, it kinda is. The boy always said that Lil Pumpkin's long hair is her "trademark". When people meet her for the first time, they are always so amazed by her long, luscious hair that reaches past her butt line. How is it that this small little girl has such long hair???

Most Chinese friends will ask if we shaved her head when she was a baby {because the Chinese believe that doing so makes the hair grow back stronger & thicker} but no, we didn't. It's purely genetics and truth is, I only trim it maybe only once, at most twice a year. And usually after much nagging from my own mum who thinks that having long hair is a drag and such a hassle to tie-up and keep tidy.

I'm the one who usually has to comb / tie Lil Pumpkin's hair up and don't see what's the big deal about it {plus I've always wanted long hair for myself!!} but since Lil Pumpkin is going to Primary 1 next year and should know how to tie her own hair / keep it neat especially since her new school has strict rules about grooming & decorum, having a shorter hairstyle will be much easier for her to handle.

Lil Pumpkin loves having long hair because her fave Disney Princess characters i.e. Ariel, Rapunzel, Elsa, all have long hair.

However, she was also very excited to go and get a "professional haircut" actually!! Her first major one!! She's usually there when I cut my hair with Berne and knows the drill - hair wash, blow-dry, hair cut, hair styling - so was all ready to get eager to get "pampered" and treated like a Princess too! ( ⋂‿⋂’)

This was the first time Berne cut Lil Pumpkin's hair. Now he is officially the hairstylist for our whole family hahahahah #thankyou

I wasn't really keen on bringing Lil Pumpkin to a kids hair salon because I reckon it's a waste of money?? I mean, you're paying more for the frills of keeping your kid quiet entertained during the haircut instead of the hairstylist's skills and hair-styling experience. If I'm gonna fork out a good amount of money for a job that I usually do for free {hah!}, I'd rather have someone I trust handling Lil Pumpkin's hair and if Berne is good enough for me, he's good enough for Lil Pumpkin *grins*

I usually give Lil Pumpkin a quick snip and wasn't sure how long she'd be able to sit for the whole haircut session. She was a real trooper and managed to sit still {with a few butt wiggles and big yawns} for around 1.5hrs though!! (●→‿ฺ←●)

Seriously wasn't expecting it to be that long but oh well, it's Berne. He takes every hair cut seriously. Even for kids.

Very delighted with her haircut and admiring her new hairstyle in the mirror (♥◕ฺ∀◕ฺ)

So sleek and chic!!! ♥ We couldn't bear to go too short so just cut off about 15cm and layered the ends. It really does look much neater now and is much lighter!!

You can see part of her haircut session in the short video above. If it's not working, watch it on my YouTube channel here

Yes, I know there's still about 3 more weeks before she starts P1 but knowing Berne, his salon will be so crazy crowded during year's end and I don't think we'll have time to go down just before school starts too. Hope her hair won't get too wild by then!

Oh ya, in case you missed it, I cut my hair a few weeks ago too after Lil Pumpkin's P1 orientation. A short pixie bob.

LOVING IT!!! (-^〇^-)

The V-shape behind does look much neater, and it's still long and luscious!

K had really long hair (till her bum) too in K2 and we chopped off a drastic lot this year, but it's all growing back quite fast. :)

Have fun buying school approved hair accessories! It's like a whole new set of colours.

Very nice! Lil Pumpkin suddenly looks grown up after the haircut, so amazing!

Oh yeah, 1.5h for a hair cut is a little long for a young one to sit through but I think it was worth the wait - your hairstylist Berne did an excellent job with Lil Pumpkin's hair cut, she still looks so adorable in the new hairdo. I also like your pixie hair cut... you look like the character Joy from Inside Out!

I love her long hair!! 😂 Going to P1 is a big milestone for her and mummy too. You will enjoy it. All the best! And out of the point, but I love her dress! :)

Hahha I agree with you to not go to kids salon. I went to a few and always end up going back to a Normal Adult hair salon to get Ewan's hair fixed. Not like they are cheap! $20 for a kiddy salon is quite expensive!

Loving your hair. Really really love! Haha I shall share my hair salon experience in the next blog hop maybe! Hehe

Oh, so looks so grown up now. I love both looks on her, though! Your pixi looks amazing, Ai! I wish I could pull off that kind of cut. My face is too fat and round though, short hair never looks good on me.

Lyn: Oh I've started buying black clips and rubber bands about 1 year back already haha. They are so cheap in China and Vietnam!

Kless: Yes I thought so too!

Danessa: Thank you :) Ya a lot of people have mentioned that I look like JOY now too. Didn't realise until I cut it haha

Beautiful Chaos: thanks! it's from Mary Had A Little Lamb. I've a matching one too :P

May: Your hairstylist really did a fantastic job with Ewan's curls. Such a cute Kpop star hahaha

Theresa: Nonsense! Your face is NOT fat and round!

Totally agree about not paying to cut when I can do it myself hehe. But with so much hair, think it's wise to leave it to a professional! Hahaha

He did do a great job with her hair. I like it before and after. She's just cute no matter what you do. :) Your hair cut looks great too. Glad you found a keeper for a stylist!!

Her hair was so long! It's still quite long for a kid her age. I think she will never want to cut her hair short. I agree with you about those kids hair salons.... For my boys, the normal barber shops will do too. If the child will cry, I think those gimmicks will not help either.

Wow, you're planning to teach Pumpkin to tie up her own hair for school? I was envisioning myself continuing to help Little E braid her hair for school since I get such a kick out of doing her hair.

Oh, and I'm impressed that she sat for 1.5 hours for a haircut. That's good training right there. Well done, Ai!

I love how you both look! I actually like my hair short, but I have so many cowlicks in the back of my hair. After a month it looks like I have a tail.

You really rock in your pixie cut!! I LOVE pixie cuts but whenever I do something like that I end up looking like I have a crazy round face and gained an additional 10kg or something. *cries*

I was kinda shocked initially when I read your blog title but SO GLAD that Lil Pumpkin didn't snip off all her long hair! Still very cute!

1.5 hours?! Woo! It's only a trim, she does still have LONG hair for sure! And wow maybe it's the camera angle, but she looks so matured in the after shot. Still very nice. :)

And YOU look great as well.
