Vine | Twitter's Latest Video-Sharing App

Twitter released Vine, a new video-sharing app about 2 weeks back for Apple iPhone & iPod Touch {sorry for those on other platforms!}, which is like maybe a year in the social media world?? haha. Simply put, it's like Instagram for short videos. It's not the first time that you can add videos to Twitter posts as you can embed YouTube or Vimeo videos, and it is definitely not the first video-sharing app, but this one requires no editing {in fact, you can't even press to focus as it starts shooting otherwise} and lets you shoot multiple short cuts to make one single, 6-second video.

Simply hold your finger to the screen to record. Alternatively, when you remove your finger, recording stops, and restarts by placing your finger to the screen again. Once your video is complete, you will see a preview. The app automatically loops everything together into a continuous video, and the result looks very much like an animated GIF :) From the preview you can choose to delete or publish on Vine, Twitter or Facebook {if you connect to those accounts}.

Like Instagram, users can also follow other Viners {is that a word yet??} separately throughout the app, as well as comment and like.

What I like about Vine:
  • extremely easy to use
  • records sound and voice {6-second vlog, anyone?}
  • integrates with Twitter in the same way that Instagram does, but Vine videos can be embedded directly in tweets, so you can view in your streams
  • can choose to start / stop a video, or just let it loop
  • very interesting {and pretty hilarious!} plus gives a lot more information than just a snapshot, obviously

What needs improvement:
  • no option for private profiles
  • doesn't support non-Romanised hash tags
  • doesn't allow you to post saved videos from your Camera Roll
  • doesn't save videos taken with the app on your Camera Roll {Vine says it should but nope}
  • crashes and lags more often than I appreciate
  • sends notifications for each comment received after yours on a post
  • not able to tag someone in the comments
  • even if you connect to your Facebook account, you can't add contacts from there {payback for the Instagram fiasco?}. Only from search, twitter or invite.
  • can't connect and share directly to Tumblr, Youtube etc

Of course, Vine is still in the early stages and is updating frequently so hopefully these will be improved on. I do hope they add filters too :) Apparently Vine videos can also show up in a separate Vine website, but I'm not sure how to find it. Help?

If you are on the Vine, add me as @AiSakuraHaruka!

Note: Vine has a 17+ age rating and a warning that the app may contain mature content, although I've not come across any personally. It also has a tool to report inappropriate content or spammers.
