Thailand 2017 | Ready-to-Drink Protein Shakes

Any serious gym user, body-builder or fitness enthusiast would know that protein is life (∩_∩) Exercise requires healthy muscles and protein is important for repairing, maintaining and building muscles. Whether your fitness goal is to lose fat, body build or gain strength, protein is an important part of your diet.

Nowadays my goal is to eat 120g protein per day. It's easier to plan when I'm at home to meal-prep and stick to a more routine diet, but holidays can make things a bit more difficult since the schedule is less fixed & I'd be eating out more often.

When we travel, I will usually bring my protein bars {see my other fave high-protein snacks} at least to make sure I've some "guaranteed" protein at hand as they are compact and convenient. The boy will usually pack his protein powder along too but I find those too much of a hassle as you still need to measure, add water & shake haha.

In one of our trips to Bangkok {BKK} last year, we discovered pre-made, ready-to-drink protein shakes from Meiji! Each milkshake bottle contains decent amount of protein, is delicious and really easy to find. Yeah, you don't even need to go to a nutrition or supplements store to find these.. any decent local supermarket should sell it.

During my birthday trip to BKK last month, I went to buy the Meiji protein shakes and discovered other brands too! Super excited and decided to try them all haha.. If you are in BKK and need a quick protein fix, go try them out yourself too!

Some things to note though...

i. Not all protein is created equal and of course, protein quality matters too, especially if you are dieting and calories are restricted. Basically protein quality simply refers to how well or not the protein is used by the body once it has been digested. Obviously I don't expect the protein quality of these off-the-shelf shakes to compare to those made by supplement companies that sell direct e.g. Musclepharm, BPI Sports, Optimum Nutrition etc., but if you need to hit your protein count and as a quick fix, they are good enough👍

ii.  The major proteins in milk are casein and whey. These two milk proteins are both excellent sources of all the essential amino acids, but they differ in one important aspect—whey is a fast-digesting protein and casein is a slow-digesting protein. For the really, really serious and advanced gym users, protein supplement timing is crucial too and you've to take different types of protein at different times of the day.. but I don't think many of us, including myself, are at that stage yet haha.

1. Meiji High Protein Whey Formula {Chocolate}
Size: 350ml
Protein: 25g
Calories: 280 cals
Cost: THB49 {S$1.99}
Availability: High - Most supermarkets and convenience stores.

Review: This tastes just like thick, creamy Meiji chocolate milk actually, which I like and find really yummy. It is sweet and contains sugar, and has kinda high cals for the amount of protein but the good taste makes up for it haha. One bottle is rather filling and would be nice for breakfast, tea or as an after-workout refresher. Really good value-for-money. The Coffee & Classic Vanilla flavours have 50% less sugar, and there are Light versions in Banana & Plain Milk flavours that contain 18g protein, and 500mg L-Carnitine.

L-Carnitine helps the body to produce energy and is said to promote fat-burning. There's also Meiji High Protein L-Carnitine Formula {i.e. no added whey} that comes in natural, plain milk flavour. It has 500mg L-Carnitine, 18g protein and 210 calories per 350ml bottle.

2. Hooray Better Shake High Protein Whey & Casein Milk {Dark Chocolate & Coffee Latte}
Size: 300ml
Protein count: 28g
Calories: 180 cals
Cost: THB69 {S$2.81}
Availability: Medium - Family Mart, Big C, Tops, MaxValu Supermarket, Foodland etc.

Review: This is also a delicious and thick milk drink. Hooray Better Shake is the only one out of the 3 with a whey/ casein protein blend to take advantage of the different digestion and absorption rates of these two different proteins for better muscle growth. It also has relatively low cals for the amount of protein it contains, uses stevia instead of sugar and doesn't cost much more than Meiji High Protein so if given a choice, I would buy this out of the 3. It also comes in French Vanilla {20g protein, 160cals} and Coffee Latte {28g protein, 170cals}.

1% of total sales goes to charity so this might be an extra reason to support them too ♥

3. Rumble Ready-to-Drink Whey Protein {Chocolate}
Size: 500ml
Protein count: 31g
Calories: 170 cals
Cost: THB75 {S$3.05}
Availability: Medium - Villa Market, Central Food Hall, Tops, Terminal 21, Gourmet Market etc.

Review: I didn't fancy this the most out of the 3 ready-to-drink protein shakes. It was really watery {no milk added} and kind of bland. Felt pretty disappointed with the taste actually. It is, however, sugar-free and also contains the highest protein count out of the 3 and 500mg of L-Carnitine. This pre-made protein drink is not as easily available as Meiji High Protein Whey shakes. There is a Melon flavour, which is even more rare.

Are there any other ready-to-drink protein shakes in Thailand?

My 33 Candles 🎂 #YOLO

Last year I went for my first solo trip to celebrate my 32nd birthday at a Muay Thai camp. It was a very challenging and exhilarating experience where I trained 3 times a day for 8 days straight... and which I have sadly not blogged about yet #oops BUT you can see videos of my training here, here and here.

I was probably at the peak of my fitness then and as crazy as it was, the Muay Thai camp is definitely something I want to do again.

And I would have this year too if I wasn't so injured but oh well, it is what it is. #nexttimethen

I still decided to take a solo birthday trip to Bangkok this year again though to rest and relax. It's been a crazy first half year with our new family & work schedules.

I know some people think it's weird that I'd want to spend my birthday alone but like I mentioned before, being alone doesn't necessarily mean you are lonely. Sometimes it's good to be alone to give you time to be yourself and to find yourself.

As mums, daughters, sisters, friends, we can sometimes find ourselves so overwhelmed by all our different roles and expectations. If possible, it is worthwhile to have little time-outs to rediscover your sense of self, and to make an effort to care for yourself. It is not about being selfish or self-centered. It is about loving yourself, and letting yourself know that you are worth giving yourself 100% of your precious time and concentration. And I can think of no better time to do this than during my birthday.

In taking care of our own needs and wants first, we are happier and in a better position to fulfill our other roles as mums, daughters, sisters and friends.

This time, I disconnected completely from social media for the whole trip {hence zero updates for the past week!} and barely used my mobile to chat to anyone too. Probably told like less than 10 people I was even away haha.. Spent most of the time sleeping, massaging, eating, exploring and reflecting... a week of just me, myself and I.

It was a very relaxing, soul-searching trip and I came back feeling more alive and energised to take on the rest of the year. Even the boy noticed how refreshed I seem and suggested that I take another solo trip in September perhaps heh..

I really want to thank my family, especially the boy, for supporting me and letting me enjoy this birthday trip without worries. If he wasn't such a good, reliable and hands-on dad to Lil Pumpkin all the time, I wouldn't have the heart to leave too ♥

Thanks Poogeo, and Happy 33rd birthday to me!! o(^∀^*)o

Thailand 2016 | Shopping Haul from Chatuchak, JJ Mall & Local Bangkok Markets

I'm back from my 32nd Muai Thai Camp birthday trip!! #YOLO It was an amaaaaaazing experience. Much more satisfying than I expected and I can't wait to share more about it with you. And I will, I will.. I promise!!! ੧(❛▿❛✿)੭

Right after I sort out all the photos, videos and notes I jotted down about the trip. My trainers took some photos for me too and I'm waiting for them to send those over as well.

If you've been following my on-the-go updates on Facebook, Instagram and also recently Snapchat {add me at @AiSakuraHaruka}, you'd see that most of the time, I actually stayed in camp to rest and relax since I had early runs each morning and 2 Muay Thai training sessions each day. Pretty intensive.

The training site was rather out of Bangkok city centre so not near any of the usual touristy attractions or shopping areas at all. I didn't intend to go there to shop, eat or massage as I usually do when I'm in BKK though - just train - so it was ok.

There were some markets for the locals nearby which I bought some stuff from and it was a really nice, authentic Thai experience. There was none of the "touristy" stuff and most of the stall owners did not speak English actually. Thank goodness I'm rather good at communicating with others who don't speak any of my languages {good practice from all my travels & previous work}.. and charades haha

Only during the weekend, I made my way down to Chatuchak Market to shop as a special birthday treat (⌒▽⌒)☆

Overall my shopping haul from this trip is {relatively} small but thought I'd share it anyway since I haven't made a shopping haul video in ages, and it serves as a reminder to myself of what I bought too haha. I had time to make the video on the last day before I flew off...

I'm kinda mad over cute rompers now and bought a few this trip. Wore this one on my birthday.. the first time in that week I was actually out of my fitness clothes and probably the first time in many years I wasn't actually wearing a dress on my birthday haha

Check out my shopping haul video above or on my YouTube channel if it isn't showing properly. If you've seen my previous shopping haul / vlog videos you'd know that I usually do it in 1 take with little / no editing so they might be a bit long. Sit back, relax and watch with some popcorn hahaha.

I'd be posting my Muai Thai training videos too so subscribe to my YouTube channel if you don't want to miss them! Stay tuned to the upcoming blog post on my Muay Thai training camp experience at Khongsittha, Bangkok too! xox

Off for My 32nd Birthday Trip!! #YOLO

I'm in Bangkok again. The third time in the past half year I think haha. But this trip I'm here not for shopping, food or massages {although I might get to enjoy them}... no, I'm actually here for a week-long intensive Muay Thai training camp. Alone.

It's actually a present from the boy for my 32nd birthday, which is coming up this Sunday *grins*

A few weeks back the boy asked me what I wanted for my birthday. I thought about it and I really couldn't think of anything that I wanted / needed to "get", but so many things that I wanted to "experience".

On top of my list, was the chance to experience an authentic Muay Thai training camp in Thailand.

Muay Thai to me is pretty cathartic. There's something about being on the mats and being able to legitimately kick and punch things {or erm, people haha} ferociously that helps to cleanse your soul and mind. It releases your pent-up aggression and stress, and not to mention is a great way to get your body moving and fit. I'm not doing it to be a professional or join fighting competitions, but I do enjoy it as an exercise.

Some of you know that I took it up for a while a few years back and then stopped due to a very busy lifestyle as a new mum. I wanted to take it up again but time and other factors like my bad knees got in the way... now that I'm stronger thanks to my fitness training with slightly more time at my hand {or maybe just better time management skills hah!}, I reckon that I should try to get back into it.

And there's no faster way to get back into it than to be fully immersed in a Muay Thai training camp where I'll be eating and sleeping on-site, and training 2-3 times a day with local Muay Thai nak muays / experienced boxers.

Does it sound crazy to want to do that?? Maybe, but there are moments in life where you really just gotta #YOLO!!

If there's one thing I don't miss about Muay Thai it's the tedious hand-wrapping though! You can see me practising the wrap in the video above or on my YouTube channel if it isn't showing properly.

Anyway it was a pretty impromptu trip and I'm glad that we sorted everything out. My mum will stay over at our place to help the boy take care of Lil Pumpkin while I'm away for the week. Hubby has always been a very hands-on and involved dad, and I've no doubt that he can manage on his on too, but it's always nice to have an extra pair of hands to help.

And after celebrating the boy and Lil Pumpkin's birthday last week, now is my little time to celebrate.

It's not the first time that I traveled without the boy or Lil Pumpkin, but it's the first time that I'd be completely on my own throughout the entire trip. And also the first time that I'd be celebrating my birthday alone overseas too {I'll be flying back the day after}.

But that's ok. Being alone doesn't necessarily mean you are lonely.

In taking care of our own needs and wants first, we are happier and in a better position to fulfill our other roles as mums, daughters, sisters and friends.

That's how I feel anyway and thank you to hubby for understanding this, and for giving this lovely birthday present to me ♥

You can follow my Muay Thai training camp experience on Instagram and Facebook. See you all when I return as a 32 year-old!!! xox

Dinner @ KRA POW Thai Street Food, Far East Plaza

Yeah.. so apparently we didn't get enough Thai food during our trip to Thailand last week because over the weekend, we went to eat at KRA POW, a new Thai Street Food restaurant that opened in Far East Plaza {FEP} recently haha.

It's actually owned by the team behind Primitive Art Piercing & Tattoo, the place where the boy and I usually go to get inked in Singapore. They already have 3 body art shops in FEP and I guess now they want to venture into the food business. Doug messaged me that they opened just before we left for Thailand so as soon as we could when we returned, we popped by to have dinner to check it out and show some support.

Anyway, I really was missing the yummy Thai food and had a craving for creamy Thai milk tea!!

The decor is rather tastefully done up and has a cool Thai, hipster vibe. It looks very different from Primitive Art and I reckon it would be even cooler if they had some of Doug / Wendy's {resident tattoo artists at Primitive Art} impressive artwork up to decorate the walls & tie-in both brands.

The restaurant area is kinda small and I reckon that pretty soon, they will need to expand haha.We went down for an early dinner about 5+pm because we were going to catch Zootopia {which was awesome by the way!} after that and the place was almost full! It got even more crowded during the usual dinner time and I was so glad we came early and got a table.

Even though it just opened, I guess word got around on the delicious Thai food {cooked by a native Thai chef} at really affordable prices {no GST or service charges}. One of the owners, Ratree, is Thai too by the way.

KRA POW has a very simple menu of Thailand's most popular street food. There are just 4 noodle dishes, 4 rice dishes, 3 side dishes for sharing and 2 desserts available. Prices start from S$4.90.

Same same grin as the boy!! (*^▽^*) I like the giant egg basket hanging by the kitchen haha..

We ordered the Mango Salad {Som Tum Mamuang, S$6.90} which had a burst of tangy tropical flavours that was very refreshing. It was spicy, sweet, sour and fruity all at the same time.

The Chili Salt White Bait {S$6.90} is lightly dusted with chili flakes and comes with a lime mayonnaise dip but I reckon it tastes great even without. It was cooked to crispy perfection and I suggest you eat it while it's hot.

My mum had the Basil Chicken with Egg & Rice {Pad Krapow Gai, S$7.90}, which is probably the most popular, and the most beloved street food dish in ALL of Thai cuisine.

If you love hot and spicy food, you will love this vibrant dish. I had a bit of it and the chicken tasted heavenly mixed with the runny egg yolk over the hot rice!! ೭੧(❛▿❛✿) The traditional recipe calls for Thai holy basil, but this herb is usually very rare outside of Thailand and most overseas restaurants substitute it with Thai sweet basil.

However since this restaurant is called KRA POW, which means holy basil in Thai, I'd think that they used Thai holy basil in this dish for an authentic taste haha. Anyway when the dish first arrived at our table, our noses were all tickled by the peppery smell and I reckon that came from the Thai holy basil?

We ordered the Basil Pork with Egg & Rice {Pad Krapow Moo, S$7.90} for Lil Pumpkin, which has a very similar look and taste to the Basil Chicken except that it's well, pork (*≧▽≦)

Totally forgot to ask them to not put chili inside so unfortunately, Lil Pumpkin could only eat the rice and egg... with the meat and veg from my soup noodles.

My Sliced Pork with Pork Balls Soup {Guay Tiew Moo, S$6.20}. Something simple as we were going to eat popcorn during the movie later hehe.. Mum was impressed that the soup was very flavourful even with no added MSG.

The boy had the Braised Beef Soup {Guay Tiew Nuea, S$6.90} which has a similar soup base to my Sliced Pork Soup. The meat was really tender and juicy, but I think the dish would be better if it had more slices...

Lil Pumpkin was very happy with her meal, and opportunity to drink Thai Milk Tea again too!! Yum yum.. We love it so much!

I was very tempted to order the Mango Sticky Rice for dessert but didn't as I wanted to save the calories for my movie popcorn hehe.. I guess we'll be back again to try that dish and I'll order the Thai Basil Chicken for myself.

Usually when we're at FEP we'll eat at the Ayam Pengyet restaurants at Level 5, so it's nice to have another food option available there. I hope they add more items to their menu, especially more vegetables and kid-friendly, non-spicy food dishes. Currently, probably 8/10 of their dishes are spicy, which Lil Pumpkin can't take.

Maybe they would add on the famous Thai delicacy - Malang Tod. We had our first bite of Thailand's deep fried bugs {e.g. grasshoppers, crickets, water beetles, silk worms} served with a few shots of pepper and a spray of soy sauce at our recent trip. They were really appetising and even Lil Pumpkin bravely chomped down at least one small bowl! (⁎⚈᷀᷁▿⚈᷀᷁⁎)

Sawadee Ka from Sunny Thailand!! ☀

Hello from the land of big smiles, great food, cheap-cheap shopping and #massageseveryday!!! Yup, we left in the morning after watching Disney On Ice presents Magical Ice Festival and are back in Bangkok, Thailand!!

Back as in we came here last year in Nov 2015 but I got so caught up with everything when we returned home that I didn't have time to even blog 1 single post about the trip hahahaha... #oops

Here are some photos from that last trip though!

It was an amazing time as before that, I hadn't been to Thailand for about a decade or more and it was Lil Pumpkin's first trip there too! She got to experience the full package - night markets, yummy street Thai food, foot massages {unfortunately no kiddy prices but they were so cheap anyway!}, her first authentic Tuk Tuk ride...

And even her own luxury nail pampering session as a reward for being such a well-behaved traveller even under Bangkok's unwavering heat!!

This time round we went/ are going to even MORE street markets and I do hope to come back and find some time to share about our latest travel experience and some tips when coming here with the little kiddos.

Will definitely include our visit to Hello Kitty House Bangkok too! \(^ω^\) A must-visit for all the Hello Kitty lovers!!

Stay tuned and if you like, you can keep up-to-date on our current Bangkok trip via Instagram and Facebook. For those with school-going children, have a fantastic March holiday break {see 20 Holiday Activity Ideas from Parents} and see you all when I'm back! xox
