Gym Review :: Dorsett Wanchai Hotel, Hong Kong

We're heading to Hong Kong tonight for a few days with my mum to celebrate her birthday this month and will be staying at Dorsett Mongkok Hotel.

We've stayed there a couple of times, even when it was previously known as Cosmo Hotel Mongkok, but I've never used the gym there since the last time we went was before I started training regularly... think was in 2014?? Anyway I know they have a 24-hr Fitness Studio but not much is written about it on the hotel website or any other review sites.

I thought I could get some info on it to give Superman more time to plan my holiday workout but guess he'll have to design my programme after I reach and check it out. Pretty short notice but not like he's not done it before haha..

If Dorsett Mongkok Hotel's gym is anything like their sister hotel, Dorsett Wanchai Hotel, that we stayed at in November 2016, I don't think there's a lot of strength training that can be done though.. don't think I can even train my pull-ups there haha.

Dorsett Wanchai Hotel's gym is more like a fitness room. It is located in one of the hotel room floors and is actually a hotel room converted into a small fitness studio. I reckon about 4-5 pax can fit in comfortably, at most.

Accessible 24-hours a day, you have to use your hotel key-card to enter. There's 1 multi-use exercise machine {20kg - 200kg} where you can do lats pull-down, cable row, shoulder press, hamstring curl etc., 1 bench, 1 stair-climber, and a set of dumb-bells {5lb - 35lb}. In the adjoining room, there's 2 treadmills.

The lack of gym equipment notwithstanding, I like that the fitness studio is air-conditioned, bright with big windows, very clean {daily house-keeping} and well-maintained. There's also a water cooler and towels provided. If you want, you can also take a shower {toiletries provided} after your workout in the en-suite toilet with a bathtub, but then again, you might as well head back to the privacy of your own hotel room to do that haha.

Superman helped me to plan a simple holiday training programme then and this was my morning workout with the heaviest weights I lifted:

A1. Pronated Lats Pull-down, 3-4 sets, 12 reps - 80kg
A2. Supinated Lats Pull-down, 3-4 sets, 15 reps - 80kg
B1. Back-Supported Seated Arnold Press, 3-4 sets, 12 reps - 20lb
B2. Back-Supported Seated Shoulder Press, 3-4 reps, 15 reps - 10lb
C1. Back-Supported Seated Supinated Bicep Curl, 3 sets, 20 reps - 20lb
C2. Back-Supported Seated Lateral Raise, 3 sets, 20 reps - 5lb
C3. Lying Triceps Extension, 3 sets, 20 reps - 10lb
D. Stair Climber, moderate intensity, 20 mins

The reps are higher as the available weights aren't that heavy. If I could, I was supposed to do something heavier then go to failure and drop weight if necessary, instead of doing an exercise with too light weights.

I reeeeeeeally don't like to "climb stairs" on the Stair Climber machine though as the suspension is so weird and ROM so small {I like to climb 2 steps at a time}.

A post shared by Ai Sakura  (@aisakuraharuka) on
Anyway, anything is better than nothing and given my track record of putting on weight during my travels {and my love for yummilicious 鸡蛋仔!!!}.. a little daily exercise, even if just with body weight.. is very much needed hahaha.

Go Local :: Raffles Hotel Singapore's "A Last, Lingering Look at an Icon" Tour

On Monday night, Lil Pumpkin and I went down to Raffles Hotel Singapore to take "A Last, Lingering Look at an Icon" before it closes completely for restoration at the end of the year.

It was preview for a newly-launched guided tour by National Heritage Board {NHB} and Raffles Hotel Singapore. Held from Aug 1 to 12 daily, visitors can trace the footsteps of many VIPs that have entered the doors of the hotel that once faced the sea before the hotel starts Phase 2 of its restoration works on the main hotel building and Lobby, as well as a portion of the hotel suites.

Following that, Raffles Hotel Singapore will close for the final phase near the end of 2017 before a grand reopening in the second quarter of 2018.

{Raffles Hotel in present day}
I personally find it very important that Lil Pumpkin experiences and learns more about Singapore's colourful culture and heritage as much as she can.. I mean, living in a young country like Singapore that is constantly striving to progress and develop, things change very fast.

At the blink of an eye, places disappear, buildings get torn down, landscapes transform.. a lot of times, if we don't make an effort to go out and catch a glimpse or experience something for ourselves, what we have or see now will most likely be relegated to our history books in the future.

{Raffles Hotel in 1950s}
It was a real treat to enter and walk around Raffles Hotel Singapore and explore spaces that are rarely opened to the public...

While the public are free to roam the Raffles Hotel Shopping Arcade and its dining facilities like the Long Bar or Tiffin Room, inside the main building of the hotel and the Lobby are exclusive to hotel guests and their visitors.

Unless you've a reason to be there e.g. to stay, attend a wedding, meet someone who is a hotel guest, attend a tour etc., you won't have the privilege to enter at will and enjoy the ambiance, the service, the charm and the heritage of the hotel.

{Long Bar in late 1970s}
Opened in 1887, Raffles Singapore is one of the few remaining great 19th century hotels in the world. Till today, its architecture is perfectly preserved both inside and out, giving it an intoxicating blend of luxury, history and classic colonial design. Within its walls are 103 expansive suites, framed by polished teak verandas and white marble colonnades, clustered around lush tropical gardens.

In 1987, a hundred years after its founding, Raffles Hotel was gazetted as a National Monument and has undergone changes and additions to its original building over the years, as part of its upgrading.

We started off by visiting a recreation of the room where one of Raffles Hotel Singapore's famous guests - writer and Nobel Laureate, Rudyard Kipling, stayed in 1889.. just 2 years after the hotel opened.

The recreation is based on Kipling's recorded remarks of his stay in his travel log that he kept. It looked like a scene from when he just got out of bed, with fresh bread and coffee for breakfast, and a pot of curry from last night's dinner on his bedside table.

I was pretty surprised that the food props are all fresh, real food and Lil Pumpkin even commented that they smelt delicious haha...

In the adjoining room, we saw some of Kipling's works and some old photographs of the beach scenes he might have seen when he looked out of his room window as well, in case you didn't know, Raffles Hotel was originally a 10-room beach-front bungalow and the beach actually reached up to where the current South Beach Club {former SAF NCO clubhouse - where I first started to train for competitive swimming!!} is.

After that we stepped next door and learnt more about the history of Raffles Hotel, and its surrounding areas, through the crockery and food served at the Coronation of King George VI, and many others.

The elaborate menus of the events held at Raffles Hotel over the years offered a glimpse into the signature of these events.

One special dish mentioned was the "Turtle Soup" which is very different from the Asian version that we are so used to in Singapore.. but just as exotic and delicious apparently and was popular with the British royalty. It was made from a 100lb turtle and served during the Silver Jubilee dinner of King George V in 1935.

When you go for the tour, don't miss a replica of the late Lee Kuan Yew's wedding cake, minus the famous "Stikfas" {his glue company during WWII} logo sticker hehe. He had his wedding there on 30 Sep 1950

The second part of the tour was led by Mr Roslee, one of the hotel's resident historian who has worked there for the past 15 years.

You know a hotel has legit heritage when they have their own team of resident historians haha.

I really liked this part as we got to see the grand Sarkies Suite {named after the founders}, one of the hotel's presidential suites where even Prince William and his wife Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton stayed during their 2012 visit.

As we walked through, we were told that while the hotel's architecture and exterior will remain the same after the restoration due to its status as a National Monument, the interior and furniture would likely change.

For example, the handwoven Persian rugs and some of the antique furniture that we saw in the Sarkies Suite will no longer be present after the restoration..

These 2 weeks are the last time we would see and appreciate the interior of Raffles Hotel Singapore as it is now.

Upon hearing that, it really brought some pangs to my heart as I'm reminded once again that change is inevitable, and time stands still for no man...

After that we went to the Hall of Fame to see some of the many famous celebrities and personalities that the hotel has played host to - Queen Elizabeth II, George Lucas, Bill Clinton, Kofi Annan, Elizabeth Taylor, Karl Lagerfeld, just to name a few..

I'm glad that Lil Pumpkin was very engaged with the tour, listened to the guide and kept asking questions...

The tour might not be suitable for younger children though as space is limited, the group moves at a fast pace and most of the exhibits are not interactive and kids being kids.. well, it's hard to keep their tiny hands from trying to touch everything!

"A Last, Lingering Look at an Icon" exhibition and tour is curated by the Preservation of Sites and Monuments in NHB and guided by its volunteers. Tickets are priced at S$12 and include a delectable kaya souvenir.

Unfortunately, even at the time of the preview, all the tours were booked out due to overwhelming response. I doubt that there will be additional tours added, but do visit Raffles Hotel Singapore website to keep up to dates with news on its restoration works, and grand opening in 2018.

I'm sure that there would be new and interesting tours then, which you definitely don't want to miss! See more photos from  "A Last, Lingering Look at an Icon" exhibition and tour in the video above or on my YouTube channel if it isn't playing well.

Thailand 2017 | Ready-to-Drink Protein Shakes

Any serious gym user, body-builder or fitness enthusiast would know that protein is life (∩_∩) Exercise requires healthy muscles and protein is important for repairing, maintaining and building muscles. Whether your fitness goal is to lose fat, body build or gain strength, protein is an important part of your diet.

Nowadays my goal is to eat 120g protein per day. It's easier to plan when I'm at home to meal-prep and stick to a more routine diet, but holidays can make things a bit more difficult since the schedule is less fixed & I'd be eating out more often.

When we travel, I will usually bring my protein bars {see my other fave high-protein snacks} at least to make sure I've some "guaranteed" protein at hand as they are compact and convenient. The boy will usually pack his protein powder along too but I find those too much of a hassle as you still need to measure, add water & shake haha.

In one of our trips to Bangkok {BKK} last year, we discovered pre-made, ready-to-drink protein shakes from Meiji! Each milkshake bottle contains decent amount of protein, is delicious and really easy to find. Yeah, you don't even need to go to a nutrition or supplements store to find these.. any decent local supermarket should sell it.

During my birthday trip to BKK last month, I went to buy the Meiji protein shakes and discovered other brands too! Super excited and decided to try them all haha.. If you are in BKK and need a quick protein fix, go try them out yourself too!

Some things to note though...

i. Not all protein is created equal and of course, protein quality matters too, especially if you are dieting and calories are restricted. Basically protein quality simply refers to how well or not the protein is used by the body once it has been digested. Obviously I don't expect the protein quality of these off-the-shelf shakes to compare to those made by supplement companies that sell direct e.g. Musclepharm, BPI Sports, Optimum Nutrition etc., but if you need to hit your protein count and as a quick fix, they are good enough👍

ii.  The major proteins in milk are casein and whey. These two milk proteins are both excellent sources of all the essential amino acids, but they differ in one important aspect—whey is a fast-digesting protein and casein is a slow-digesting protein. For the really, really serious and advanced gym users, protein supplement timing is crucial too and you've to take different types of protein at different times of the day.. but I don't think many of us, including myself, are at that stage yet haha.

1. Meiji High Protein Whey Formula {Chocolate}
Size: 350ml
Protein: 25g
Calories: 280 cals
Cost: THB49 {S$1.99}
Availability: High - Most supermarkets and convenience stores.

Review: This tastes just like thick, creamy Meiji chocolate milk actually, which I like and find really yummy. It is sweet and contains sugar, and has kinda high cals for the amount of protein but the good taste makes up for it haha. One bottle is rather filling and would be nice for breakfast, tea or as an after-workout refresher. Really good value-for-money. The Coffee & Classic Vanilla flavours have 50% less sugar, and there are Light versions in Banana & Plain Milk flavours that contain 18g protein, and 500mg L-Carnitine.

L-Carnitine helps the body to produce energy and is said to promote fat-burning. There's also Meiji High Protein L-Carnitine Formula {i.e. no added whey} that comes in natural, plain milk flavour. It has 500mg L-Carnitine, 18g protein and 210 calories per 350ml bottle.

2. Hooray Better Shake High Protein Whey & Casein Milk {Dark Chocolate & Coffee Latte}
Size: 300ml
Protein count: 28g
Calories: 180 cals
Cost: THB69 {S$2.81}
Availability: Medium - Family Mart, Big C, Tops, MaxValu Supermarket, Foodland etc.

Review: This is also a delicious and thick milk drink. Hooray Better Shake is the only one out of the 3 with a whey/ casein protein blend to take advantage of the different digestion and absorption rates of these two different proteins for better muscle growth. It also has relatively low cals for the amount of protein it contains, uses stevia instead of sugar and doesn't cost much more than Meiji High Protein so if given a choice, I would buy this out of the 3. It also comes in French Vanilla {20g protein, 160cals} and Coffee Latte {28g protein, 170cals}.

1% of total sales goes to charity so this might be an extra reason to support them too ♥

3. Rumble Ready-to-Drink Whey Protein {Chocolate}
Size: 500ml
Protein count: 31g
Calories: 170 cals
Cost: THB75 {S$3.05}
Availability: Medium - Villa Market, Central Food Hall, Tops, Terminal 21, Gourmet Market etc.

Review: I didn't fancy this the most out of the 3 ready-to-drink protein shakes. It was really watery {no milk added} and kind of bland. Felt pretty disappointed with the taste actually. It is, however, sugar-free and also contains the highest protein count out of the 3 and 500mg of L-Carnitine. This pre-made protein drink is not as easily available as Meiji High Protein Whey shakes. There is a Melon flavour, which is even more rare.

Are there any other ready-to-drink protein shakes in Thailand?

My 33 Candles 🎂 #YOLO

Last year I went for my first solo trip to celebrate my 32nd birthday at a Muay Thai camp. It was a very challenging and exhilarating experience where I trained 3 times a day for 8 days straight... and which I have sadly not blogged about yet #oops BUT you can see videos of my training here, here and here.

I was probably at the peak of my fitness then and as crazy as it was, the Muay Thai camp is definitely something I want to do again.

And I would have this year too if I wasn't so injured but oh well, it is what it is. #nexttimethen

I still decided to take a solo birthday trip to Bangkok this year again though to rest and relax. It's been a crazy first half year with our new family & work schedules.

I know some people think it's weird that I'd want to spend my birthday alone but like I mentioned before, being alone doesn't necessarily mean you are lonely. Sometimes it's good to be alone to give you time to be yourself and to find yourself.

As mums, daughters, sisters, friends, we can sometimes find ourselves so overwhelmed by all our different roles and expectations. If possible, it is worthwhile to have little time-outs to rediscover your sense of self, and to make an effort to care for yourself. It is not about being selfish or self-centered. It is about loving yourself, and letting yourself know that you are worth giving yourself 100% of your precious time and concentration. And I can think of no better time to do this than during my birthday.

In taking care of our own needs and wants first, we are happier and in a better position to fulfill our other roles as mums, daughters, sisters and friends.

This time, I disconnected completely from social media for the whole trip {hence zero updates for the past week!} and barely used my mobile to chat to anyone too. Probably told like less than 10 people I was even away haha.. Spent most of the time sleeping, massaging, eating, exploring and reflecting... a week of just me, myself and I.

It was a very relaxing, soul-searching trip and I came back feeling more alive and energised to take on the rest of the year. Even the boy noticed how refreshed I seem and suggested that I take another solo trip in September perhaps heh..

I really want to thank my family, especially the boy, for supporting me and letting me enjoy this birthday trip without worries. If he wasn't such a good, reliable and hands-on dad to Lil Pumpkin all the time, I wouldn't have the heart to leave too ♥

Thanks Poogeo, and Happy 33rd birthday to me!! o(^∀^*)o

Gym Review :: Hard Rock Hotel Singapore @ RWS

Last weekend we had a family staycation at Festive Hotel, Resorts World Sentosa {RWS} to celebrate Lil Pumpkin's and the boy's birthday. And as per our usual practice, whenever we travel, even for short staycations, I made sure to check that there was a gym {or even a CrossFit box} that we could use to work out at as the boy and I need to keep up with our regular training somewhat.

No no.. it's not about being "hardcore" or "gym rats".. it's more about being consistent and making sure that as much as we eat hard and play hard, we still get to train hard too.

Anyway while I was searching for more information on Festive Hotel's gym, I realised something... there's usually heaps and heaps of hotel reviews and photos, but negligible, if any, proper reviews and photos on hotel gyms. Sometimes there might be a paragraph / photo or two.. but that's it. And that's pretty frustrating for people like me!! I want to know if there's a proper gym available for me to complete my programme! haha..

I mean ya, I understand.. gyms are not usually top of the list when reviewing hotels. Most people prefer to cover other amenities & facilities like restaurants, pools, kids room etc.

Previously if I wrote reviews about hotels or our accommodation I probably did not say more than two paragraphs on the gym too but I think I will start something new and review hotel gyms in detail based on our personal experience now since we tend to be going to gym almost daily during our stays, and I reckon it's useful for health-conscious tourists like us who like to work out during their travels too. I'd even rate them like I did for my Singapore Playgrounds series.

Sooo.. I'll start with our recent staycation gym, then go dig out some photos and memories of the other hotel gyms we've visited in the past.

Festive Hotel does not have a gym / fitness center of its own. Hotel guests, however, are able to use the gym at Hard Rock Hotel Singapore and it is accessible 24-hours a day by tapping in with your hotel key-card.

Hard Rock Hotel Singapore is less than 5 mins walk away from Festive Hotel by a covered walk-way, so even though the gym is not within Festive Hotel itself, it still is convenient for Festive Hotel's guests.

The gym is located at lobby level, just opposite the famous pool with a man-made sandy beach {accessible only for Hard Rock Hotel's guests} and next to the Kids Club {open to all RWS visitors at S$12/hr or 1-for-1 hour at S$12 for RWS invites members}.

Hard Rock Hotel Singapore's website describes the gym to have "contemporary interiors, state-of-the-art cardio and weight-training equipment" but to be honest, the boy and I found it to be rather disappointing considering that it is located within such a luxurious hotel in the renowned Resorts World Sentosa, and is shared by guests from FIVE RWS hotels - Hard Rock Hotel Singapore, Festive Hotel Equarius Hotel, Crockfords Tower and Hotel Michael. Yes, the other 4 hotels don't have their own gyms so everyone has to flock over to Hard Rock Hotel Singapore if they want to use a gym.

We expected it to be bigger, better-equipped and honestly, more well-maintained {like what Marriott has, perhaps?}. It's not like falling apart, but each time I used the lats pull-down machine and pulled the bar down.. I nearly fainted. It was so stinky!! (◞‸◟;)

I guess if you are just looking to get some cardio and stretching done, Hard Rock Hotel Singapore's gym is sufficient. But don't expect to do any proper barbell lifting or CrossFit WODS there haha..

The gym is only equipped with 3 exercise bikes, 1 elliptical cross trainer, 1 stair-climber, 3 treadmills, 2 benches, 1 leg press machine, 1 lats pull-down / row machine and a set of dumb-bells {2kg - 20kg}.

There isn't even any pull-up bar available! Superman passed me his weight belt & pin to take to my staycation so that I don't skip my heavy pull-up workout but unfortunately, I didn't get to use it even though I brought the heavy/ bulky pin along for my trip  (⁎˃ᆺ˂) I went to the gym 4x during our 3D2N stay and did these 3 simple workouts {about 1 hr each},

Workout 1 with the heaviest weights I lifted:
A1. Flat Dumb-bell Bench Press, 4 sets, 8 reps - 20kg
A2. Single Dumb-bell Row, 4 sets, 8 reps - 18kg
B1. Flat Dumb-bell Bench Press, 8 sets, 12 reps - 16kg
B2. Lats Pull-down, 8 sets, 12 reps - 9kg

Workout 2 with the heaviest weights I lifted:
A1. Seated Shoulder Press, 5 sets, 3 reps - 18kg
A2. Skater Squat, 4 sets, 10 reps - 6kg {left} & 2kg {right}
B1. Seated Arnold Press, 4 sets, 15 reps - 12kg
B2. Dumb-bell Step Up , 4 sets, 15 reps - 6kg
C1. Bicep Curl {Supinated}, 3 sets, 15 reps - 6kg
C2. Lying Tricep Extension, 3 sets, 15 reps - 8kg

Workout 3 with the heaviest weights I lifted:
A. Lats Raise, 10 sets, 10 reps - 2kg
B. Skater Squat, 10 sets, 10 reps - 4kg

Hubby used it once with me when we checked it out for the first time on our first staycation night, then decided he'd rather drive back to use our own home gym the next day before work haha and since the third day was his birthday, he rested and didn't use the hotel gym either.

If the boy can't be bothered to use the gym when there's one right at our doorstep, I think it says a lot about the gym actually.... (¬д¬。)

Like I mentioned above, we expected more from Hard Rock Hotel Singapore's gym given its prestigious location and since it's supposed to cater to guests from 5 hotels, but although we found it slightly disappointing, it is still a decent gym since it is clean, air-conditioned, has a water dispenser & TV with limited cable channels, and isn't crowded at all in the early mornings and late nights.

Since it is conveniently located next to the Kids Club, parents with kids can also easily drop them off next-door under supervised care while you work out with a peace of mind #winning

And oh, if you come early enough in the morning, there's a basket of free fruits for you to pick from too. Do remember to bring your own towels though as none are provided.

Malaysia 2016 | Legoland Hotel & Theme Parks Snapchat Diary

I really liked using Snapchat as a visual diary during our Tokyo,  Japan trip in the June holidays so did the same thing when we went to Legoland Malaysia Resort earlier this week (*^▽^*)

It's so easy to snap, update our family & friends on-the-go and come back to string it all together in the short videos below:

The boy booked us a 4D3N stay in Legoland Hotel itself with 2-day combo tickets for each of us to both Legoland Theme Park {the dry one} and Legoland Water Park.

With the combo tickets, it allowed us multi-entry into both parks on 2 consecutive days.

That was a Godsend, really, because Lil Pumpkin was feeling so sick on our first day at the theme parks! (≧_≦*) She had been looking forward to going to Legoland for oh-so-long and it was such a pity that she fell ill just before the trip!!

So using our combo tickets, we were able to leave Legoland Theme Park after about 2-3 hours of visit, then head back to Legoland Hotel and rest. I went back again a while later with my mum to check out the rest of the park that we missed.

On the second day, Lil Pumpkin felt much better so we were able to leave to Legoland Water Park earlier, spend half a day there, go back to the hotel for lunch and to rest, then head out to Legoland Theme Park for the rest of the rides and attractions she missed the day earlier.

The good thing about Legoland Theme Park and Legoland Water Park is that it is fully geared towards the kids so even at her height of around 120cm, Lil Pumpkin can sit ALL the rides!! Wow!! I think that's the first time she can actually sit all the rides at a theme park hahaha. Her favourite were Technic Twister and The Dragon - both roller coasters!

Unfortunately for me, I'm too big for some of the rides though.. but at least the roller coasters and fast rides were ok ໒( ͡ᵔ ▾ ͡ᵔ )७

If you do head to Legoland Malaysia, I highly recommend staying at Legoland Hotel. It's not that expensive, the rooms are themed & decorated well, it has many super-fun and free kids play areas and our package came with an awesome daily buffet breakfast at the hotel's Brick Restaurant {see pics & vids of it in the videos above}.

But most importantly, it really is so convenient to have the hotel at the theme parks' doorstep {literally just 5 mins walk away from both!} so that you can break up your day at the theme parks and go back to rest. I'm not sure about you, but age is really catching up on me haha and I can't really last a whole day out playing at amusement parks... especially when I'm chasing  Lil Pumpkin around while I'm at it (●⌒∇⌒●)

Anyway add me on Snapchat as @AiSakuraHaruka and if the videos above aren't playing properly, watch directly on my YouTube channel here:

Some of the other theme parks we've visited include Universal Studios Singapore, Asakusa Hanayashiki Tokyo {Japan}, Tokyo One Piece Tower {Japan}, Resorts World Genting {Malaysia}, Hong Kong Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland {Japan}, and Lotte World Seoul {Korea}

Hope everyone had a wonderful September school holiday break with the family!! xox

P.S. Do note that if you purchase Day tickets, you are not allowed multi-entry into the theme parks.

P.P.S. There's a Ninjago 4D indoor ride opening in November 2016!! So exciting!! Looks like we've to make a trip back haha
