Gym Review :: Dorsett Wanchai Hotel, Hong Kong

We're heading to Hong Kong tonight for a few days with my mum to celebrate her birthday this month and will be staying at Dorsett Mongkok Hotel.

We've stayed there a couple of times, even when it was previously known as Cosmo Hotel Mongkok, but I've never used the gym there since the last time we went was before I started training regularly... think was in 2014?? Anyway I know they have a 24-hr Fitness Studio but not much is written about it on the hotel website or any other review sites.

I thought I could get some info on it to give Superman more time to plan my holiday workout but guess he'll have to design my programme after I reach and check it out. Pretty short notice but not like he's not done it before haha..

If Dorsett Mongkok Hotel's gym is anything like their sister hotel, Dorsett Wanchai Hotel, that we stayed at in November 2016, I don't think there's a lot of strength training that can be done though.. don't think I can even train my pull-ups there haha.

Dorsett Wanchai Hotel's gym is more like a fitness room. It is located in one of the hotel room floors and is actually a hotel room converted into a small fitness studio. I reckon about 4-5 pax can fit in comfortably, at most.

Accessible 24-hours a day, you have to use your hotel key-card to enter. There's 1 multi-use exercise machine {20kg - 200kg} where you can do lats pull-down, cable row, shoulder press, hamstring curl etc., 1 bench, 1 stair-climber, and a set of dumb-bells {5lb - 35lb}. In the adjoining room, there's 2 treadmills.

The lack of gym equipment notwithstanding, I like that the fitness studio is air-conditioned, bright with big windows, very clean {daily house-keeping} and well-maintained. There's also a water cooler and towels provided. If you want, you can also take a shower {toiletries provided} after your workout in the en-suite toilet with a bathtub, but then again, you might as well head back to the privacy of your own hotel room to do that haha.

Superman helped me to plan a simple holiday training programme then and this was my morning workout with the heaviest weights I lifted:

A1. Pronated Lats Pull-down, 3-4 sets, 12 reps - 80kg
A2. Supinated Lats Pull-down, 3-4 sets, 15 reps - 80kg
B1. Back-Supported Seated Arnold Press, 3-4 sets, 12 reps - 20lb
B2. Back-Supported Seated Shoulder Press, 3-4 reps, 15 reps - 10lb
C1. Back-Supported Seated Supinated Bicep Curl, 3 sets, 20 reps - 20lb
C2. Back-Supported Seated Lateral Raise, 3 sets, 20 reps - 5lb
C3. Lying Triceps Extension, 3 sets, 20 reps - 10lb
D. Stair Climber, moderate intensity, 20 mins

The reps are higher as the available weights aren't that heavy. If I could, I was supposed to do something heavier then go to failure and drop weight if necessary, instead of doing an exercise with too light weights.

I reeeeeeeally don't like to "climb stairs" on the Stair Climber machine though as the suspension is so weird and ROM so small {I like to climb 2 steps at a time}.

Anyway, anything is better than nothing and given my track record of putting on weight during my travels {and my love for yummilicious 鸡蛋仔!!!}.. a little daily exercise, even if just with body weight.. is very much needed hahaha.

Gym Review :: Hard Rock Hotel Singapore @ RWS

Last weekend we had a family staycation at Festive Hotel, Resorts World Sentosa {RWS} to celebrate Lil Pumpkin's and the boy's birthday. And as per our usual practice, whenever we travel, even for short staycations, I made sure to check that there was a gym {or even a CrossFit box} that we could use to work out at as the boy and I need to keep up with our regular training somewhat.

No no.. it's not about being "hardcore" or "gym rats".. it's more about being consistent and making sure that as much as we eat hard and play hard, we still get to train hard too.

Anyway while I was searching for more information on Festive Hotel's gym, I realised something... there's usually heaps and heaps of hotel reviews and photos, but negligible, if any, proper reviews and photos on hotel gyms. Sometimes there might be a paragraph / photo or two.. but that's it. And that's pretty frustrating for people like me!! I want to know if there's a proper gym available for me to complete my programme! haha..

I mean ya, I understand.. gyms are not usually top of the list when reviewing hotels. Most people prefer to cover other amenities & facilities like restaurants, pools, kids room etc.

Previously if I wrote reviews about hotels or our accommodation I probably did not say more than two paragraphs on the gym too but I think I will start something new and review hotel gyms in detail based on our personal experience now since we tend to be going to gym almost daily during our stays, and I reckon it's useful for health-conscious tourists like us who like to work out during their travels too. I'd even rate them like I did for my Singapore Playgrounds series.

Sooo.. I'll start with our recent staycation gym, then go dig out some photos and memories of the other hotel gyms we've visited in the past.

Festive Hotel does not have a gym / fitness center of its own. Hotel guests, however, are able to use the gym at Hard Rock Hotel Singapore and it is accessible 24-hours a day by tapping in with your hotel key-card.

Hard Rock Hotel Singapore is less than 5 mins walk away from Festive Hotel by a covered walk-way, so even though the gym is not within Festive Hotel itself, it still is convenient for Festive Hotel's guests.

The gym is located at lobby level, just opposite the famous pool with a man-made sandy beach {accessible only for Hard Rock Hotel's guests} and next to the Kids Club {open to all RWS visitors at S$12/hr or 1-for-1 hour at S$12 for RWS invites members}.

Hard Rock Hotel Singapore's website describes the gym to have "contemporary interiors, state-of-the-art cardio and weight-training equipment" but to be honest, the boy and I found it to be rather disappointing considering that it is located within such a luxurious hotel in the renowned Resorts World Sentosa, and is shared by guests from FIVE RWS hotels - Hard Rock Hotel Singapore, Festive Hotel Equarius Hotel, Crockfords Tower and Hotel Michael. Yes, the other 4 hotels don't have their own gyms so everyone has to flock over to Hard Rock Hotel Singapore if they want to use a gym.

We expected it to be bigger, better-equipped and honestly, more well-maintained {like what Marriott has, perhaps?}. It's not like falling apart, but each time I used the lats pull-down machine and pulled the bar down.. I nearly fainted. It was so stinky!! (◞‸◟;)

I guess if you are just looking to get some cardio and stretching done, Hard Rock Hotel Singapore's gym is sufficient. But don't expect to do any proper barbell lifting or CrossFit WODS there haha..

The gym is only equipped with 3 exercise bikes, 1 elliptical cross trainer, 1 stair-climber, 3 treadmills, 2 benches, 1 leg press machine, 1 lats pull-down / row machine and a set of dumb-bells {2kg - 20kg}.

There isn't even any pull-up bar available! Superman passed me his weight belt & pin to take to my staycation so that I don't skip my heavy pull-up workout but unfortunately, I didn't get to use it even though I brought the heavy/ bulky pin along for my trip  (⁎˃ᆺ˂) I went to the gym 4x during our 3D2N stay and did these 3 simple workouts {about 1 hr each},

Workout 1 with the heaviest weights I lifted:
A1. Flat Dumb-bell Bench Press, 4 sets, 8 reps - 20kg
A2. Single Dumb-bell Row, 4 sets, 8 reps - 18kg
B1. Flat Dumb-bell Bench Press, 8 sets, 12 reps - 16kg
B2. Lats Pull-down, 8 sets, 12 reps - 9kg

Workout 2 with the heaviest weights I lifted:
A1. Seated Shoulder Press, 5 sets, 3 reps - 18kg
A2. Skater Squat, 4 sets, 10 reps - 6kg {left} & 2kg {right}
B1. Seated Arnold Press, 4 sets, 15 reps - 12kg
B2. Dumb-bell Step Up , 4 sets, 15 reps - 6kg
C1. Bicep Curl {Supinated}, 3 sets, 15 reps - 6kg
C2. Lying Tricep Extension, 3 sets, 15 reps - 8kg

Workout 3 with the heaviest weights I lifted:
A. Lats Raise, 10 sets, 10 reps - 2kg
B. Skater Squat, 10 sets, 10 reps - 4kg

Hubby used it once with me when we checked it out for the first time on our first staycation night, then decided he'd rather drive back to use our own home gym the next day before work haha and since the third day was his birthday, he rested and didn't use the hotel gym either.

If the boy can't be bothered to use the gym when there's one right at our doorstep, I think it says a lot about the gym actually.... (¬д¬。)

Like I mentioned above, we expected more from Hard Rock Hotel Singapore's gym given its prestigious location and since it's supposed to cater to guests from 5 hotels, but although we found it slightly disappointing, it is still a decent gym since it is clean, air-conditioned, has a water dispenser & TV with limited cable channels, and isn't crowded at all in the early mornings and late nights.

Since it is conveniently located next to the Kids Club, parents with kids can also easily drop them off next-door under supervised care while you work out with a peace of mind #winning

And oh, if you come early enough in the morning, there's a basket of free fruits for you to pick from too. Do remember to bring your own towels though as none are provided.

Happy Happy Birthday Weekend! σ(≧ε≦o)

May has always been my favourite month of the year what with so many birthday celebrations this month... including mine, of course (*^▽^*)

We've been to Sentosa sooooo many times, but this weekend will be the first time we are going to have a family staycation there!! As always, Lil Pumpkin wanted to go to Universal Studios for her birthday {if we aren't traveling during this period we'd usually bring her too} so I had a look at the Resorts World Sentosa {RWS} staycation packages and decided to book one for the weekend as a surprise gift for the boy and her! ♥ And yup, we'll be staying there for 3D2N and be going not just to one theme park.. but to THREE - USS, Adventure Cove AND Sea Aquarium!!! Woohoo!!!

It' a long awaited rest-and-relax time with the family as we haven't gone for any holiday overseas or staycations this year yet... considering that we used to travel at least once a month, even for short weekend trips, this has been quite a record! But oh well.. we've really been busy juggling our new work, school and extra-curricular activities for the year so this break is long-awaited and very welcome.

Lil Pumpkin will be celebrating her birthday today, and on Sunday will be the boy's special 40th birthday!!! Woot woot!!! What a milestone!

I really wanted to do something extra meaningful for him, so I gathered some of our friends and families to wish him happy birthday and printed giant posters of the messages to put up on our wall, and encourage him for the future as a reminder that he is loved and respected not just by his immediate family, but by everyone he meets too. There's a positive and inspiring glow within him that touches people.. and the most wondrous thing is, he doesn't even realise it. And I really wanted him to know it.

It was a pretty impromptu idea because it took me a long time to figure out what to give something to a man who seems to have it all.. I only started on this project last week {!!!} so I'm very grateful to those that answered my last-minute request & took the effort to think through and write personal and meaningful birthday wishes to him. Thank you.

As I read through all the wonderful messages that poured in, it made my heart swell with pride and eyes tear with joy. Not meaning to brag or whatever, but honestly, my dear husband is such a well-liked guy that has motivated many others through his kind heart, hard work and humbleness. He is not a man of many words, but his actions speak louder than anything he can ever say and truly, I can safely assure you that if you ever meet him outside, he is the same honest, caring, loving and thoughtful man at home too.

I am so proud to call him my husband, and so blessed to have him take care of me and be a father to Lil Pumpkin.

Happy 8th birthday to our darling daughter, and happy 40th birthday to my dear Poogeo!
IT'S CELEBRATION TIME!!! (ノ^?^)ノ*:・゚✧

P.S. It's my dad's birthday this Sunday too!! Yup, he and hubs share the same birthday!!

P.P.S. I gave hubby his gift yesterday as I didn't want to lug the huge posters all the way to Sentosa haha.. the boy was truly surprised, touched and adored them too. Mission accomplished ♥

P.P.P.S. These family photos are the recent ones taken by Alwyn at Gardens by the Bay {East}. Check out the rest of the collection here. We love them!

Weekend Getaway | Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel Anniversary Staycation ♥

We're heading to Shanghai next week {gonna get more Feiyue shoes & celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival there yay!} so I'd better write about our 7th marriage anniversary staycation at Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel last month before I go. It was in one word - unforgettable.

As a city girl at heart, I love Orchard Road for all the excitement and convenience it brings. Except during holidays and festivals when it gets crazy crowded but yeah, I love going down to Orchard Road because there's always something new and intriguing to see, do and eat there. A swanky boulevard flanked by distinctive shopping malls, restaurants and hotels, our famous shopping belt offers a mind-boggling array of retail, dining and entertainment options to please any taste or wallet size - from opulent brands to budget fashion, and exclusive restaurants to fast food joints.

Sometimes I think living in Orchard Road would be a dream come true but unless we strike lottery, that's all that it will be - a dream. Luckily though, I can still realise that dream in a small way by having little luxurious staycation escapes at the hotels there ◝(●˙꒳˙●)◜

We had our wedding at Four Seasons Hotel, which is slightly off from the main part of Orchard Road, and now 7 years later, we celebrated our 7th marriage anniversary at Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel, which is right smack in the midst of Orchard Road's bustle!

A 5-star hotel strategically located in the heart of Orchard Road, this is one landmark hotel you just can't miss with its signature green-tiled Chinese pagoda roof that was originally part of the old Dynasty Hotel.

There's array of impeccable hotel amenities - from state-of-the-art furnishings in every room and suite, to the luxury spa, to delight any guest. The gastronomic indulgences, as we soon found out, are aplenty at five award-winning restaurants and bars offering Cantonese and international cuisine, as well as take-away gourmet pastries and aromatic coffee.

We were given this welcome gift filled with nostalgic local toys & snacks during check-in. Such a thoughtful gesture that's appealing to both the locals and foreign tourists!

We spent a night at a Pool Terrace Room on Level 5, where the hotel swimming pool was literally right at our door step!!

Guess who was the happiest one of us all?? :) Yup, it was definitely Lil Pumpkin!! Didn't matter that she just finished her swim class the day we checked in, she was happy to go to the pool all over again.

View from our room porch. It was the first time we stayed at a room overlooking the pool and although it's really convenient to have the pool just a few steps away, one of the disadvantages is that your room will also be filled with the carefree shouts and cheerful shrieks of the pool crowd during the day time.

If you are sensitive to noise pollution, or if you have a baby that needs to nap often, this room is not for you.

However, if you have a family like us who loves to spend most of our time at the pool anyway, then this room is perfect. Swim, eat, play, sleep. Swim, eat, play, sleep. Repeat (。◕ฺˇε ˇ◕ฺ。)That really is our family motto whenever we are away on a relaxing weekend staycation haha.

The Pool Terrace Room is extremely spacious and reminds me of a resort villa with its wood finishing, stone walls and skylight at the end of the room. I love love love the open-concept giant bathtub, and appreciated that the hotel provided fragrant bath salts for a relaxing soak too... because surprisingly, not all hotels do!

Our plush king-sized bed was comfortable and big enough for all 3 of us, and the room has a bathroom with rain showers, THANN aromatherapy bath products and an adjacent vanity area, complimentary unlimited wired and wireless broadband Internet access, fully stocked mini-bar, Nespresso {!!} coffee and tea making facilities, iron, hairdryer etc.

That night, we had a belated anniversary dinner at Marriott Cafe at the hotel lobby. I wore my Meadow Leaves Printed Dress with the boy's anniversary gift for me.. the SG50 Petite Malle ❤(◕‿◕✿) #thankyoudear #loveyou

Goodness! I must be living under a rock!!! With more than 50 succulent dishes, live cooking stations and a large salad bar, this stylish buffet restaurant is such a foodie heaven and I have no idea why we've never come here before our staycation.

There was the freshest selection of oysters, lobsters, snow crabs, crayfish and prawns...

... local dishes such as the chilli crab, chicken rice, succulent crispy pork knuckles, roasted prime ribs, lamb leg, Japanese sashimi and sushi, salad, cheese, smoked & cured meat etc.

Cooked a la minute for your pleasure, chefs will also whip up hot pasta dishes to your preference.

Imagine my joy when I saw one of the best selection of desserts ever with cakes, puddings, crèmes, curd & gelato!! #fatdieme

Despite the extensive selection of food, the quality was impeccable and each bite was well worth the calories I was eating. There's nothing worst when you're on a fitness program than wasting calories on yucky food hahaha (*≧∀≦*)

The restaurant was pretty full but I must say that the staff were efficient in clearing the tables, and the food was replenished continuously. I never saw an empty tray of food for long, even for the popular seafood items like oysters and snow crabs.

If a buffet dinner is not your thing, check out Marriott Cafe's all-day ala carte dining menu here.

After dinner we stepped out for a night walk along Orchard Road without worry of getting home too late... one of the perks of staying in Orchard!! Took this shot of the pool on way back to the room. So gorgeous with all the bright city lights.

With our Pool Terrace Room, we also had access to the Executive Lounge on Level 27 where we can choose to dine there for our complimentary Continental Breakfast {daily 6am - 10am}, or enjoy complimentary cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and desserts {daily 5.30pm - 7.30pm}.

Unfortunately, the Executive Lounge is not kid-friendly and children under 12 years of age are not allowed admittance. We went up to take a look after our walk with Lil Pumpkin and the staff there reminded us that she was not allowed in. She was so sad and asked pitifully, "so where are you going to put me then??"

I thought they might have allowed her in since there weren't many guests there at that time and Lil Pumpkin wasn't being rowdy but rules are rules. Obviously the boy and I weren't going to leave her alone while we enjoyed the Executive Lounge so we just took a quick look {the view there is stunning!!} and left. If Singapore Marriott Tang Hotel had a kids club where there were staff to supervise the kids at play while the parents went away for some quiet time, we might have though :P

Maybe since the Executive Lounge is so big, they can carve out a space just for families, or set some hours that kids can enter too. If not, really, which parent is going to leave their young kids in the room alone while they live it up in the lounge?

Later that night, while Lil Pumpkin and the boy were sound asleep, I sneaked away to go to the hotel gym. I hadn't been able to sleep very well recently and thought that rather than tossing around in bed, I might as well work up a sweat.. especially after that full meal I had at our buffet dinner haha. The old me would have pooh-poohed at the idea of wasting precious time meant for relaxing at the gym, but now I actually find it a good way to unwind.

The fitness centre is located just a floor below the pool and I didn't even have to take the lift - just a flight of stairs down at one end of the pool. It is available 24/7 via card access, and is really well-equipped! There are state-of-the-art cardiovascular machines, running and cycling equipment and free-weights so I could easily complete one of my home workout programs there. Gotta love a fully-furnished hotel gym that easily allows guests to keep fit and healthy even away from home.

Morning breakfast the next day was at Marriott Cafe again and the spread was no less impressive than the night before.

There was a huge selection of Asian and Continental dishes that included Singaporean specialties, an omelet station {shout-out to the chef there who was so friendly & cheerfully greeted everyone!}, various types of ham, sausage, bacon, a large selection of fresh fruit, juices and yogurts, fresh pastries and breads.

This time, however, we sat at the adjoining Crossroad Cafe, watching the world go by along the famed Orchard Road from this sidewalk restaurant. We've passed by it a many times and always thought to stop by and find out what it was like to dine there.

Now we know (*´ω`*)

Love these two so much!!

Oh Lil Pumpkin liked the mochi cakes from the night before and wanted to have them for breakfast again but unfortunately, they don't serve that during breakfast. However, the chef specially went into the kitchen and brought them to our table for her!! I think these were for the lunch buffet. So sweet.

The Marriott Cafe breakfast is open not just to hotel guests, but the public as well. See the breakfast prices and menu here.

We went for another dip at the pool after that. Silly me forgot to bring Lil Pumpkin's floats and pool toys! There's none provided by the hotel so please bring your own if you're staying there.
Lil Pumpkin didn't mind though and still had soooo much fun wading and swimming around in the clear blue waters. This is the only available pool and although there's no kiddy pool, there's a shallow pool area near the wooden shelters behind.

Actually we all enjoyed unwinding in the pool too... wish we could do this everyday!!

We requested for a late-checkout so managed to eat at the refurbished, al fresco Pool Grill after our swim. Something light after our full morning breakfast.

Their brunch sets cames with a kickstart and specialty eggs so we ordered Bircher Muesli with Honey Milk, Banana Pancakes with Gula Melaka & Coconut Milk, Poached Eggs with Avocado & Smoked Cod Fish {my fave!!}, and Poached Eggs with Jamon Serrano, Fresh Fig & Goat Cheese.

Not to mention how flavoursome the food was, they were all so prettily plated and inspired me to want to do the same for whatever food I cooked at home and make even the simplest dish memorable too #lifegoals

It was a really wonderful anniversary staycation and I'm thinking that we should do one every year now on! hahaha...

There was no doubt that the Singapore Marriott Tang Hotel's facilities were top-notch and luxurious, but what truly surprised me was the various dining experiences we had during our stay there. Absolutely mouth-watering dishes cooked to perfection that I keep thinking about, even up to today, and I would love to go back and to dine again soon.
