Gym Review :: Hard Rock Hotel Singapore @ RWS

Last weekend we had a family staycation at Festive Hotel, Resorts World Sentosa {RWS} to celebrate Lil Pumpkin's and the boy's birthday. And as per our usual practice, whenever we travel, even for short staycations, I made sure to check that there was a gym {or even a CrossFit box} that we could use to work out at as the boy and I need to keep up with our regular training somewhat.

No no.. it's not about being "hardcore" or "gym rats".. it's more about being consistent and making sure that as much as we eat hard and play hard, we still get to train hard too.

Anyway while I was searching for more information on Festive Hotel's gym, I realised something... there's usually heaps and heaps of hotel reviews and photos, but negligible, if any, proper reviews and photos on hotel gyms. Sometimes there might be a paragraph / photo or two.. but that's it. And that's pretty frustrating for people like me!! I want to know if there's a proper gym available for me to complete my programme! haha..

I mean ya, I understand.. gyms are not usually top of the list when reviewing hotels. Most people prefer to cover other amenities & facilities like restaurants, pools, kids room etc.

Previously if I wrote reviews about hotels or our accommodation I probably did not say more than two paragraphs on the gym too but I think I will start something new and review hotel gyms in detail based on our personal experience now since we tend to be going to gym almost daily during our stays, and I reckon it's useful for health-conscious tourists like us who like to work out during their travels too. I'd even rate them like I did for my Singapore Playgrounds series.

Sooo.. I'll start with our recent staycation gym, then go dig out some photos and memories of the other hotel gyms we've visited in the past.

Festive Hotel does not have a gym / fitness center of its own. Hotel guests, however, are able to use the gym at Hard Rock Hotel Singapore and it is accessible 24-hours a day by tapping in with your hotel key-card.

Hard Rock Hotel Singapore is less than 5 mins walk away from Festive Hotel by a covered walk-way, so even though the gym is not within Festive Hotel itself, it still is convenient for Festive Hotel's guests.

The gym is located at lobby level, just opposite the famous pool with a man-made sandy beach {accessible only for Hard Rock Hotel's guests} and next to the Kids Club {open to all RWS visitors at S$12/hr or 1-for-1 hour at S$12 for RWS invites members}.

Hard Rock Hotel Singapore's website describes the gym to have "contemporary interiors, state-of-the-art cardio and weight-training equipment" but to be honest, the boy and I found it to be rather disappointing considering that it is located within such a luxurious hotel in the renowned Resorts World Sentosa, and is shared by guests from FIVE RWS hotels - Hard Rock Hotel Singapore, Festive Hotel Equarius Hotel, Crockfords Tower and Hotel Michael. Yes, the other 4 hotels don't have their own gyms so everyone has to flock over to Hard Rock Hotel Singapore if they want to use a gym.

We expected it to be bigger, better-equipped and honestly, more well-maintained {like what Marriott has, perhaps?}. It's not like falling apart, but each time I used the lats pull-down machine and pulled the bar down.. I nearly fainted. It was so stinky!! (◞‸◟;)

I guess if you are just looking to get some cardio and stretching done, Hard Rock Hotel Singapore's gym is sufficient. But don't expect to do any proper barbell lifting or CrossFit WODS there haha..

The gym is only equipped with 3 exercise bikes, 1 elliptical cross trainer, 1 stair-climber, 3 treadmills, 2 benches, 1 leg press machine, 1 lats pull-down / row machine and a set of dumb-bells {2kg - 20kg}.

There isn't even any pull-up bar available! Superman passed me his weight belt & pin to take to my staycation so that I don't skip my heavy pull-up workout but unfortunately, I didn't get to use it even though I brought the heavy/ bulky pin along for my trip  (⁎˃ᆺ˂) I went to the gym 4x during our 3D2N stay and did these 3 simple workouts {about 1 hr each},

Workout 1 with the heaviest weights I lifted:
A1. Flat Dumb-bell Bench Press, 4 sets, 8 reps - 20kg
A2. Single Dumb-bell Row, 4 sets, 8 reps - 18kg
B1. Flat Dumb-bell Bench Press, 8 sets, 12 reps - 16kg
B2. Lats Pull-down, 8 sets, 12 reps - 9kg

Workout 2 with the heaviest weights I lifted:
A1. Seated Shoulder Press, 5 sets, 3 reps - 18kg
A2. Skater Squat, 4 sets, 10 reps - 6kg {left} & 2kg {right}
B1. Seated Arnold Press, 4 sets, 15 reps - 12kg
B2. Dumb-bell Step Up , 4 sets, 15 reps - 6kg
C1. Bicep Curl {Supinated}, 3 sets, 15 reps - 6kg
C2. Lying Tricep Extension, 3 sets, 15 reps - 8kg

Workout 3 with the heaviest weights I lifted:
A. Lats Raise, 10 sets, 10 reps - 2kg
B. Skater Squat, 10 sets, 10 reps - 4kg

Hubby used it once with me when we checked it out for the first time on our first staycation night, then decided he'd rather drive back to use our own home gym the next day before work haha and since the third day was his birthday, he rested and didn't use the hotel gym either.

If the boy can't be bothered to use the gym when there's one right at our doorstep, I think it says a lot about the gym actually.... (¬д¬。)

Like I mentioned above, we expected more from Hard Rock Hotel Singapore's gym given its prestigious location and since it's supposed to cater to guests from 5 hotels, but although we found it slightly disappointing, it is still a decent gym since it is clean, air-conditioned, has a water dispenser & TV with limited cable channels, and isn't crowded at all in the early mornings and late nights.

Since it is conveniently located next to the Kids Club, parents with kids can also easily drop them off next-door under supervised care while you work out with a peace of mind #winning

And oh, if you come early enough in the morning, there's a basket of free fruits for you to pick from too. Do remember to bring your own towels though as none are provided.

Happy Happy Birthday Weekend! σ(≧ε≦o)

May has always been my favourite month of the year what with so many birthday celebrations this month... including mine, of course (*^▽^*)

We've been to Sentosa sooooo many times, but this weekend will be the first time we are going to have a family staycation there!! As always, Lil Pumpkin wanted to go to Universal Studios for her birthday {if we aren't traveling during this period we'd usually bring her too} so I had a look at the Resorts World Sentosa {RWS} staycation packages and decided to book one for the weekend as a surprise gift for the boy and her! ♥ And yup, we'll be staying there for 3D2N and be going not just to one theme park.. but to THREE - USS, Adventure Cove AND Sea Aquarium!!! Woohoo!!!

It' a long awaited rest-and-relax time with the family as we haven't gone for any holiday overseas or staycations this year yet... considering that we used to travel at least once a month, even for short weekend trips, this has been quite a record! But oh well.. we've really been busy juggling our new work, school and extra-curricular activities for the year so this break is long-awaited and very welcome.

Lil Pumpkin will be celebrating her birthday today, and on Sunday will be the boy's special 40th birthday!!! Woot woot!!! What a milestone!

I really wanted to do something extra meaningful for him, so I gathered some of our friends and families to wish him happy birthday and printed giant posters of the messages to put up on our wall, and encourage him for the future as a reminder that he is loved and respected not just by his immediate family, but by everyone he meets too. There's a positive and inspiring glow within him that touches people.. and the most wondrous thing is, he doesn't even realise it. And I really wanted him to know it.

It was a pretty impromptu idea because it took me a long time to figure out what to give something to a man who seems to have it all.. I only started on this project last week {!!!} so I'm very grateful to those that answered my last-minute request & took the effort to think through and write personal and meaningful birthday wishes to him. Thank you.

As I read through all the wonderful messages that poured in, it made my heart swell with pride and eyes tear with joy. Not meaning to brag or whatever, but honestly, my dear husband is such a well-liked guy that has motivated many others through his kind heart, hard work and humbleness. He is not a man of many words, but his actions speak louder than anything he can ever say and truly, I can safely assure you that if you ever meet him outside, he is the same honest, caring, loving and thoughtful man at home too.

I am so proud to call him my husband, and so blessed to have him take care of me and be a father to Lil Pumpkin.

Happy 8th birthday to our darling daughter, and happy 40th birthday to my dear Poogeo!
IT'S CELEBRATION TIME!!! (ノ^ヮ^)ノ*:・゚✧

P.S. It's my dad's birthday this Sunday too!! Yup, he and hubs share the same birthday!!

P.P.S. I gave hubby his gift yesterday as I didn't want to lug the huge posters all the way to Sentosa haha.. the boy was truly surprised, touched and adored them too. Mission accomplished ♥

P.P.P.S. These family photos are the recent ones taken by Alwyn at Gardens by the Bay {East}. Check out the rest of the collection here. We love them!

Christmas 2015 | Santa’s All-Star X'mas @ Universal Studios Singapore {USS}, RWS

We enjoyed our Christmas experience at Universal Studios Singapore {USS} last year and were soooo excited to go again!!

Lil Pumpkin is officially no longer a preschooler {she had her last day of preschool on Tuesday *sobs sobs*} so on Wednesday the boy and I took leave to bring her to Santa's All-Star Christmas at the theme park! Kind of like a graduation celebration ✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧

Her grandma, cousin Big R & aunt came along too. They are very camera-shy {unlike me hahaha} so not many photos with them and won't be showing their faces.

Baby J is still too tiny to stay out in the crowd a full day {plus it's been pouring so badly lately} so she didn't join in the fun. I'm sure she'd love it next year though!!

It's fantastic that USS appeals to family members of all ages, from young to old.

My mother doesn't really like to sit the rides, but she loves watching the different shows, meeting the characters and soaking in the festivities with all the special holiday decorations that's even more magical at night. Not to forget the "snowfall" every hour!

Haven't had much opportunities to spend quality time with her lately due to our busyness, so was extremely happy she could join us for a truly multi-generational fun family time out (⁎⚈᷀᷁▿⚈᷀᷁⁎)

This year, our favourite characters at USS joined those from classical Christmas tales to put up 3 new shows just for the festive season! I was really looking forward to watching them but dang! I realised only when we were there that they are shown just during the weekends (ㄒoㄒ)

Mostly at night, the new shows for 2015 are:

{source}
1. A Hollywood Christmas Gift Show
Time / Venue: Lagoon Stage, Hollywood zone {Twice daily, 6.45pm and 8.55pm}
Details: The Penguins of Madagascar, King Julien, Marilyn Monroe and the Minions join the Toy Soldiers in a show where they embark on a gifting journey.

{source}
2. A Scrooge Christmas Splendour
Time / Venue: Sting Alley near the Waterfront, New York zone {6.45pm}
Details: Sting Alley is transformed into a Victorian Christmas scene right out of 19th Century England!! Interact with Scrooge, his neighbours and the Christmas carolers at Sting Alley.

{source}
3. Fairytale Remix Show
Time/ Venue: New York Public Library, New York zone {Twice daily, 7.20pm and 8.30pm}
Details: A unique Christmas story told through song and dance by an All-Star fairtytale cast, including Santa Claus, Frosty The Snowman, Snow Queen, The Gingerbread Man, The Elves and the Shoemaker, Scrooge, The Little Match Girl and the Toy Soldiers.

Take note that actual show times might change on your day of visit so please check each day’s schedule for the show times.

Sometimes choosing the day to visit USS is such a conundrum! Should we go during the weekday when it's likely to be less crowded so we can sit the rides and meet the characters {slightly} faster? Or should we go during the weekends when there are special shows like these on but it'll definitely be even more packed with people???

Oh well. At least we managed to catch the usual Christmas specials like Winter Tales where a light show is projected on the façade of the New York Public Library and the award-winning Sesame Street Saves Christmas show at Pantages Hollywood Theater.

Those are still fantastic shows that we all adore (⌒▽⌒)☆

Something else I was looking forward to was to take photos with Santa Claus. Especially with this particular Santa at USS because he really does look and sound the part!

Is it just me or there's not really many places in Singapore that lets you get up and cozy with Santa? In places like US and UK, I think a lot of malls have "Meet Santa" sessions for kids to talk and tell him their Christmas wishes, but not really here. Honestly I'd rather have more "Meet Santa" sessions at the malls than cartoon character meet-and-greets during the Christmas holiday season. More festive and meaningful??

Anyway I made sure we were there at 12 noon for Lil Pumpkin to talk to him and take our family Christmas shots in case the weather turned bad later in the day or the crowd got too crazy.

Santa Claus is at his meet-and-greet area at the end of Hollywood zone every hour from 12 noon to 9pm. If it starts to rain, Santa will not be at the the meet-and-greet area but will walk around Hollywood zone instead to snap shots with the visitors.

We managed to see other characters that were specially dressed up for the Christmas season too!

... Including the Minions!! So so cute!! It's our first time meeting them during Christmas as they didn't have this meet-and-greet for last year's edition.

There are special Christmas specials available at the restaurants too.

We tried out Santa's Signature Burger set, which includes an uber-red beetroot grilled chicken burger {can't really taste the beetroot but the chicken was very tender}, fries and a drink of your choice for S$14.

If you're there for the festive Christmas season, don't forget to check out the Christmas-themed souvenirs. I spotted quite a number of new items for 2015, including the mini Cookie Monster gingerbread plushie I'm holding above. Comes in a mini Elmo design as well!

There's Christmas-themed souvenirs and gifts for the Minions collection too. Tree ornaments cost S$30 for 4 pieces, and the Minion with a Santa Hat popcorn bucket costs S$39 {S$35 without the hat, both includes popcorn}.

During this period, USS is open longer {10am - 9pm} for visitors to have even more time to enjoy all the park has to offer and we definitely made full use of it!!

I can't remember the number of times we went on Lil Pumpkin's fave rides, Puss In Boots' Giant Journey & Enchanted Airways, and the adults were so stoked to finally managed to sit on Battlestar Galactica again after it was closed for 2 years. Max waiting time was only 40mins yay!!!!!

Unfortunately we didn't get to see the Christmas Fireworks Spectacular as it's only on from 19 - 29 Dec 2015 but it was a fantastic family day-out nonetheless. Lil Pumpkin's already asking when we can go again!! (*≧∀≦*)

Hmmm... maybe next year during her birthday in May?? ♥ See Lil Pumpkin playing with the "snow" at USS on my Youtube channel if the video above isn't working.

Christmas 2014 | Snowy Santa's Land @ Universal Studios Singapore {USS}, RWS

The boy and I took leave last Friday to bring Lil Pumpkin to Universal Studios Singapore {USS}. It's currently decked in tinsel and holly, and transformed into "Santa's Land" with extended hours until 9pm daily. We've never experienced Christmas in USS before so was really excited to check it out!!

Even though it was a Friday and Battlestar Galactica was still closed {set to be relaunched soon though *grins*}, it was still pretty packed at USS..  I guess because it's the school holidays. I'd usually try to avoid crowds at theme parks during the school holiday season but we wanted to have a happy family day out with Lil Pumpkin before the boy went into surgery today {for hernia again!} since he'll be down for a while. Good thing we went on Friday too because it was one of the rare days that had lotsa sunshine instead of heavy downpour!

Was absolutely delighted that we got to have a family photo taken with Santa Claus!! I think it's our first photo with him :))) He's out at the end of Hollywood zone on the hour from 12pm. I'd suggest getting your photos taken in the early afternoon though when the sun is still out but not that glaring.

One of the best part about celebrating Christmas at USS was being able to experience a "snowfall" every hour at three of their themed zones - Hollywood, New York and Sci-Fi City. Lil Pumpkin really loved that! In front of the New York Public Library was a also a HUGE Christmas tree made entirely of plush toys. There's a new show playing there now - Santa's Toy Soldiers, where toy soldiers came to life as if they marched to the beat of the drums. This show apparently takes place twice every evening during this limited period.

Lil Pumpkin was so excited the whole day that she didn't even take her afternoon nap! Oh well.. at least she wasn't grouchy because of that haha. We sat all her favourite rides like the Magadascar boat ride, Sesame Street Spaghetti Space Chase & Enchanted Airways roller coaster rides a few times!

The meet-and-greet sessions were also extra special as we got to see characters from Magadascar, Sesame Street, Shrek etc. decked out in Christmas outfits! So cute!!

The meet-and-greets at USS are very organised as everyone has to queue to take a photo with them, and the USS staff will also help you to take a photo with your own camera, if you wish. This ensures everyone that's queuing has a chance to take a nice photo with them, without any random photo-bombing or mobbing from the crowd!

At previous visits {here, here and here} we'll usually see Betty Boop, Puss in Boots, Kungfu Panda etc. but most of the characters we met that day were for the first time.. yay!!

We also caught the award-winning Christmas-themed Sesame Street show, Sesame Street Saves Christmas, at Pantages Hollywood Theater. It had all my favourite Christmas jingles, lovable Sesame Characters and a delightful storyline about the Sesame Street gang helping Santa and his elves keep Christmas out of jeopardy!

It was so entertaining that we watched it twice haha. The air-conditioned theatre was a nice respite from the heat that day too :P

There were a lot of Christmas-themed limited edition souvenirs, mainly from the Minions and Sesame street range, on sale too. Was so tempted to buy everything... especially the cute Seasame Street tree ornaments! And Gingy! I love yooooooou~

Anyway, if you plan to go, try to visit during a Friday or Saturday as there's a Christmas Fireworks Spectacular set to light up the night with new music and pyrotechnics. It happens every Friday and Saturday for the month of December, with and additional show on Christmas Day :)

Snowy Christmas Celebration at Universal Studios Singapore, RWS
Event period: 1 Dec 2014 - 4 Jan 2015
Extended park hours: 10am - 9pm {except 19 Dec 2014. For 31 Dec, NYE program will start from 7pm.}
Admission: Adults - S$84, Child - S$64, Senior Citizen - S$46 {includes Christmas set meal voucher}

P.S. Check out RWS S.E.A. Aquarium during this Christmas season as well as they will also join in the festivities with "Merry Fishmas". There will be appearances by Scuba Santa {!!} accompanied by an elf up to 3 times daily haha. I saw that you can get a festive bundle deal to USS and S.E.A. Aquarium for S$68 here.

Bub & Me: RWS S.E.A. Aquarium Guided Tour {Spooky Seas Holiday Theme}

Our family had a little treat last Saturday when we went for a 3-hour VIP guided tour around RWS S.E.A. Aquarium. With a friendly guide following us the whole way, we got to know more fascinating facts of the marine world and its many inhabitants, and had privileged access to back-of-house areas for the rare chance to participate in the feeding of animals & talk to their in-house aquarists and marine mammal specialists.

This was our 3rd visit to the S.E.A. Aquarium and if you've been there that many times as well, I'd recommend this tour to you since the aquarium doesn't change its exhibits much, and you'll get to discover and learn so much more with this guided experience. Plus, you'll also get a back-of-house tour of Dolphin Island too!

The last time we went in February, they had a Chinese New Year theme and this time we experienced their Spooky Seas theme to get into the Halloween fun. It is on now until 16 Nov 2014.

For the parents who aren't very keen on Halloween because of the ghouls, ghosts and possible pagan roots, take note that there will be characters such as the Mermaid Witch & Monster Seahorse walking around for meet-and-greets, and Halloween decorations like pumpkins & skeletons in the aquarium exhibits. They really aren't that scary though.

For us, we don't read too much into Halloween and just see it as a time for Lil Pumpkin to have some fun & dress up, which is why we were happy to let her go in her Queen Elsa costume :P She even requested me to braid her hair on one side like Elsa!

As part of the Spooky Seas theme, kids start of making their own Trick-or-Treat paper bag before going Trick-or-Treating through S.E.A. Aquarium, while learning more amazing facts about seemingly scary animals and discover why they are often misunderstood! This is open to all visitors and not just guests on the guided tour. It really upped the interaction and fun level for kids.

With a map in hand, kids can set off on this fun and educational adventure through 12 activity stations. Luckily for us, we didn't really need the map since we had a personal guide with us haha.

Other than the usual exhibit attractions, there are 2 back-of-house experiences at S.E.A. Aquarium during the guided tour. One was an amazing opportunity to go to the top of the Open Ocean Habitat tank to feed the marine animals, where you reeeeeaaaally appreciate how enormous the Giant Manta Rays are!! The acrylic aquarium tank walls for the exhibits are about 70 cm thick to withstand the water pressure and actually makes the fish look smaller than usual.

The second was to go to where some in-house aquarists work to learn more about their jobs, how they clean the tanks, how they breed jellyfish, corals, seahorses etc! Really fascinating and we were very pleased that Lil Pumpkin listened closely to what the aquarist was saying, and was interested enough to ask questions of her own :)

Sorry I can't show you in pictures since no photography and videography is allowed during any part of the back-of-house tour to keep it exclusive.

 During the guided tour we didn't have to queue at the Discovery Touch Pool either! A real time-saver since it was very crowded that weekend. Lil Pumpkin wasn't scared to touch the knobbly sea star, pencil sea urchin, sea cucumber and more there.

The last back-of-house experience was over at Dolphin Island. Direct interactions with dolphins are not included in the Dolphin Island back-of-house tour, but we got to talk to a marine mammal specialists to learn how the 23 Indo-Pacifiic bottlenose dolphins are taken care at RWS, their behaviour, diet and unique features.

There's a lot of views over how the dolphins are treated and whether we should house them in the first place. My view, as a wife of a vet & friends with others, is that... no animal care-taker, whether they are vets, zookeepers, aquarists, marine mammal specials, dolphin trainers etc. will really want to harm any animals if they can help it. If so, they wouldn't be in that business because for the amount of work and time they put in, they can get paid higher elsewhere. Most of them do it because they really care for the animals, and not for profits.

The VIP guided tour is great not just for the added experience to a normal outing to the S.E.A. Aquarium, but also an opportunity to talk to the real people taking care of the marine animals and working behind the scenes. It was a good chance to clear any misconceptions or get any questions about marine life answered. Although I felt quite tired from all the walking, it definitely was a very fruitful experience for all of us :)
